‘Glorious old homes’ in Garland Hill
Historic homes line the streets of Garland Hill, less than a mile from Downtown Lynchburg. “Homes were built around 1885, some built more recently,” says Susan Murray, a Realtor with eXp Realty and resident of Garland Hill. “They’re just glorious old homes.” Many historical figures lived in these homes, including Civil War generals, equal rights activists and the inventor of ChapStick, Charles B. Fleet. The area's oldest home is the Lynch House, built in 1787 by the Lynch family, a year after the city's founding. “Garland Hill was named after Samuel Garland,” says Murray, noting Garland was the son of a Civil War general. The Garland home still sits on its original plot in Garland Hill. At one point, Fifth Street, once a thriving thoroughfare in the area, was set to be demolished and made into a two-lane highway, which would have isolated the neighborhood from downtown Lynchburg. The city decided to refurbish Fifth Street instead and made the area more walkable and attractive to business owners. Now, the street is slowly returning to its former glory.

Homes starting at $130,000
Older homes sit on open, rolling lawns along gridded streets. Most areas have small sidewalks lining cobbled streets bordered by trees and shrubs. Many homes are large and ornate and feature styles such as Queen Anne, Colonial Revival and Victorian. Smaller homes built more recently are in the Foursquare and minimal traditional styles. Ornate homes range from $330,000 to $550,000, while those with simpler styles range from $130,000 to $250,000.

James River Trail Tunnel and Old City Cemetery
“There’s a ton of walking paths and running trails,” says Chase Hankins, a Realtor with Realty One Group Leading Edge. “There’s lots of outdoor stuff to do.” Beside Garland Hill is the James River Trail Tunnel, a section of the 10-mile James River Heritage Trail covered by a tunnel hewn from the side of a rock face. Branching off the James River Heritage Trail, beside Blackwater Creek, is Hollins Mill Park, where residents may fish near the Hollins Mill Dam. Before 1863, the area was part of Blackwater Mills, owned by William Hollins. Residents may access the Blackwater Creek Bikeway from the park. Near Fifth Street, Biggers Park has a colorful jungle gym next to an open field for children. Basketball hoops sit beside the field for pick-up games. In neighboring Tinbridge Hill, Old City Cemetery features historical gravesites beside rose gardens, museums and monuments. “People like to walk through the Old City Cemetery,” says Hankins.

Bright Nights light up the holiday season
During the holiday season, the Downtown Lynchburg Association decorates the Bluff Walk near the James River with colorful lights for residents to view throughout the holiday season. The association kicks off the event with a bouncy house, photo opportunities and local vendors. “The Downtown Lynchburg Association has so many events,” says Murray. “Bright Nights is during the Christmas season. They have a festival for the opening of that. It was mobbed, and it was so much fun. They kept the lights up for the rest of December.” Residents looking to attend religious services may visit St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, Holy Cross Catholic Church, Court Street United Methodist Church and others in the area.
