Residential area 9 miles from downtown Lynchburg
Kenwood Hills, also known as the Old Graves Mill area, sits 9 miles from downtown Lynchburg between an industrial park and Thomas Jefferson’s Poplar Forest. “The area is convenient to all parts of the city,” says Tracy Ellett, a Realtor with Keller Williams Lynchburg. Tomahawk Industrial Park specializes in distribution and order fulfillment, and offers warehousing services for manufacturers and suppliers. In the wooded area off Enterprise Drive is Poplar Forest, the Founding Father's vacation home and grounds. “We restored the house last year,” says Mary Massie, the site's director of programs and education. “Now, we’re restoring the grounds.” The home was a secret during Jefferson’s lifetime, and he would use it to escape the constant visitors of the more widely known Monticello.
Single-family homes and townhouses from $260,000
Homes are organized in rows along gridded streets branching off Old Graves Mill Road. There are no sidewalks and homes are set back from the street with large, rolling lawns and long driveways. Some residences have attached garages and carports. Homes were built in the early 1970s in the Colonial Revival, ranch and split-level styles with brick and vinyl siding. Homes and townhouses range from $260,000 to $311,000.
Visual arts program at Heritage High School
Children may attend Heritage Elementary School, which receives a C-plus from Niche, and Linkhorne Middle School, which receives a B-minus. Students advance to Heritage High School, which receives a B-minus and offers an intensive visual arts program with AP-level classes.
Commuting on U.S. 221, and bus stops
Kenwood Hills is car-dependent, but residents can easily access U.S. Route 221 and Route 501 nearby. Bus stops are also along nearby roadways, including Timberlake Road and Enterprise Drive. The Lynchburg Regional Airport is 5 miles away.
Powerhouse Sports Training Facility and Timberlake Dixie Girls Softball Field
The Powerhouse Sports Training Facility within the Tomahawk Industrial Park offers batting cages for baseball and softball teams. For their games, local minor-league teams head to the Timberlake Dixie Girls Softball Field.
Shopping and Dining along Forest and Timberlake road
“Forest Road has lots of retail and restaurants,” says Ellett. “And downtown is more independent boutiques and up-and-coming places with a view of the river.” Residents have access to two roadways lined with shopping and dining options. Timberlake Road has a Kroger and several chain restaurants and strip malls. Along Forest Road, Graves Mill Shopping Center has a Food Lion and The Crazy Mason Milkshake Bar, a chain ice cream bar with over-the-top milkshakes.
Colonial Fair at Poplar Forest
Poplar Forest hosts yearly events and is open daily for independent tours. The landmark also offers docent-guided tours in the morning and afternoon. “We have a Colonial Fair on the Fourth of July,” says Massie. “There are trades and crafts from the time period. Lace makers, puppet shows, entertainment and trades from Jefferson’s period.” There are performances on the grounds, such as the musical “1776” and behind-the-scenes restoration and archaeology tours. Residents looking to attend religious services nearby may visit Cornerstone Community Church, Seven Hills Church of Christ and St. Thomas More Catholic Church.
