Miller Park’s namesake is a community gathering spot
Miller Park, 2 miles from downtown Lynchburg, is a lively community made up of historic homes and a large namesake park that stretches 30 acres and includes playgrounds, sports fields, trails and an Olympic-sized swimming pool. “Miller Park has been around forever,” says Robert Dawson, a Realtor with Berkshire Hathaway Home Services Dawson Ford Garbee and Co., who has been selling homes in Lynchburg for over four decades. “A lot of people gather at the park. They walk, they run, they host picnics. It’s a lot of fun.” The park, considered to be the first public park in Lynchburg, was named for Samuel Miller, who was born poor in the late 1700s, but grew up to become one of the South’s wealthiest businessmen ahead of the Civil War. “Miller Park is very popular,” says Brooke Bowie, who grew up in the area. “Everyone goes to this pool in the summer.” Bowie says Memorial Avenue is the area's main strip and the public library, E.C. Glass High School and a lot of restaurants are also nearby.
Parties at the Aviary
The Aviary at Miller Park, a Queen Anne-style building that was built in 1902, is popular for events including weddings, bridal showers and birthday parties. “I’ve been to several parties there,” says Dawson. Down the street from The Aviary is the Miller Center, which offers dance and fitness studios, a theatre, and Nature Zone, an environmental education center. The nearest golf course is Oakwood Country Club, which is 5 miles away.
Games and events at City Stadium
People spend their weekends at the City Stadium Complex and Lawn, whether it’s to watch a Lynchburg Hillcats Minor League Baseball game (sometimes with an encore of fireworks) or cheer on the E.C. Glass High School football team on a fall Friday night. The complex also hosts events like pride month and Lynchburg’s annual wine and music festival.
Bungalows from $100,000
Potential homebuyers will find early 1900s bungalows and Craftsman homes that range between $100,000 and $300,000, depending on the number of rooms and yard space.
Standout sports at E.C. Glass High School
Lynchburg City Public School District serves children in Miller Park. Students can attend T.C. Miller Elementary School for Innovation, which receives a C-plus from Niche, before advancing to Dunbar Middle School for Innovation. The middle school was recently recognized by the district for serving students for 100 years and earns a B-minus from Niche. Kids can move on to E.C. Glass High School, which earns a B-plus. It's known for its athletic program, with an especially dominant soccer program and a list of alumni that includes NFL great Ruben Brown. Liberty Christian Academy (LCA), a private school for grades K-12, is about 5 miles away and has more than 1,800 students. It's affiliated with Liberty University, one of the world’s largest Christian universities, also located in Lynchburg. The University and the K-12 Academy both offer online courses and have an extensive web presence.LCA is also affiliated with Thomas Road Baptist Church. Other houses of worship closer to home include West Lynchburg Baptist Church and Fort Hill United Methodist Church.
Global cuisine and a ‘World Famous’ dive bar
Wards Road is home to comforting food spots including Milan Indian Cuisine and Moon Tea and Mochi Donut. F and L Market Grocery Store is the popular grocery store in Miller Park. The World Famous Stadium Inn is the go-to nightlife spot in the neighborhood that offers a dive bar atmosphere. Here, neighbors can watch weekly sports games on the big screen with a side of beer and appetizers. The Plaza, a business center on Memorial Avenue, is home to a Dollar Tree, Citi Trends, and the neighborhood library. Venue Cinemas, a second-run theater offering discount ticket prices, is also nearby.
Commuting on U.S. Route 29
Miller Park is in a good location since it's close to downtown, Dawson says. The area is easy to reach by hopping on U.S. Route 29 or using the public bus service. Lynchburg Regional Airport is 6 miles away.
