Suburban living in Oakwood
A mainly residential area, Oakwood is 4 miles from downtown Lynchburg and offers access to two major medical centers, a country club and a college. Its proximity to downtown and the Boonsboro area makes Oakwood a convenient location for those who want to live a suburban lifestyle, but be near the city. The Virginia Baptist Hospital is next door to the Oakwood Country Club, and the Centra Lynchburg General Hospital is 8 minutes away. Rivermont Avenue connects Oakwood to nearby Randolph College and downtown. “Randolph College has adult lifelong learning classes, and the students that go there are part of our community,” says Jane Blickenstaff, owner of Blickenstaff & Co Realtors and resident. She said some of the students work as babysitters for parents around Lynchburg.

Single-family homes from $240,000
“The Peakland and Oakwood areas are very desirable,” says Blickenstaff. “There are people who have been longtime residents and young people with families.” Winding roads surrounded by thick trees make up the residential area. There are no sidewalks, and homes are set back from the street on medium to large lots. Yards are well-manicured, and oak, maple, and sycamore trees surround the properties. “The area has beautiful older homes from the 1920s and 1940s,” says Blickenstaff. “We have some of Lynchburg’s finest and biggest homes, but there are smaller, charming homes, so you don’t have to spend a ton of money if you wanna live here.” Homes are in the ranch, Cape Cod, Colonial Revival and new historicism styles. Cape Cod and ranch-style homes range from $240,000 to $400,000. Colonial Revival and new historicism homes range from $410,000 to $655,0000. Townhouses range from $490,000 to $510,000. “People are renovating houses right and left,” says Blickenstaff. “But can still be purchased at a reasonable price.”
Cape Cod homes are another style you will see in Oakwood.

Sustainable green spaces at Randolph College
“Lynchburg has a greenway called the Blackwater Creek Trail,” says Blickenstaff. “People can walk and bike with their dogs.” The trail is a part of the Lynchburg trail system and can be used to walk or bike into downtown. Randolph College has the Dorothy Crandall Bliss Botanic Garden, which is open to the public and contains a pond surrounded by walking trails and benches. Behind the school, students help maintain the Randolph College Organic Garden. “It’s not open to the public,” says Edson. “But sometimes the public sees it. We have chicken coops, garden plots, there’s a little pond up there and fruit trees. All sustainable. It’s a federation-certified habitat with an amphibian pond and an edible perennial area.”

Socializing at Oakwood County Club and golfing at Boonsboro Country Club
“We’ve got a lot of festivals and fun things downtown,” says Blickenstaff. Residents may join the Oakwood Country Club for activities closer to home. The location used to have a nine-hole golf course, but it has since become a residential community called The Preserve. Residents still enjoy the country club for the pool, tennis courts and dining. Locals interested in golf may become members of the Boonsboro Country Club, which has an 18-hole course that is listed as one of the top golf courses in Virginia. “Some people belong to both clubs because they love the social atmosphere and dining at Oakwood,” says Blickenstaff. “And they play golf at Boonsboro.” The Maier Museum of Art at Randolph College is open to the public and features internationally acclaimed artists. At times, seniors exhibit their work. “We have a museum and heritage studies major,” says Edson. “They help with the museum and tours.” Residents who wish to attend religious services may visit Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, First Christian Church, First Presbyterian Church and other houses of worship in the area.
Aside from golf, Oakwood Country Club has tennis as well.
