Forgotten Hill remembered
Known as the Forgotten Hill, Tinbridge Hill is a small residential area 1 mile from Downtown Lynchburg. While Tinbridge is not one of the seven historic hill neighborhoods within Lynchburg, the area has an antiquity of its own. After the Civil War, the neighborhood became a self-sustaining, primarily Black community with a hospital and a school. However, due to economic hardship, many homes became rental properties, and the area began to decline. In 2014, the city implemented A Sustainable Neighborhood Plan for Tinbridge Hill. The city partnered with the Tinbridge Hill Neighborhood and nonprofits to renew the area. Since then, new sidewalks have been built, and homes have been remodeled. “They’ve started a lot of revitalization projects down there,” says Chase Hankins, a Realtor with Realty One Group Leading Edge. “Some of the older homes, they’re actually being given renovation credits.”

Yoder Center and Old City Cemetery
The James River Heritage Trail, part of the Lynchburg Trail System, leads into downtown and connects to other walking paths throughout the area. Hollins Mill Park is accessible along the trail and sits beside Blackwater Creek. The park was once the site of Blackwater Mills, and an old stone dam creates a waterfall where residents may fish. Established in 1964, the Yoder Center is Lynchburg’s oldest neighborhood center and offers a community garden and programs for all ages. Founded in 1806, Old City Cemetery is the oldest municipal cemetery in Virginia. “Tinbridge Hill is next to Old City Cemetery,” says Susan Murray, a Realtor with eXp Realty. “Over the last 20 years, a garden club picked it up, and people go there to look up their ancestors. It’s actually one of my favorite places in the world.” The gravegarden blooms with roses, dogwoods, azaleas and other native plants. The Pest House Medical Museum, one of five museums on the 27-acre site, shows the 1840s and 1850s living conditions for those quarantined in the house due to an infectious disease.
