Commercial and residential areas in Westend

Westend, also called Midtown or West Lynchburg by locals, is 3 miles from downtown and offers residential living near shopping, dining and entertainment. Built at either end of the community, the University of Lynchburg and E.C. Glass High School split the neighborhood into its residential and commercial sectors. While students attend school, many locals head to work at Centra Lynchburg General Hospital or attend classes at Centra College, a local nursing school. “Centra Health is one of the big employers in Lynchburg,” says David Wilson, the Adult Services Librarian at the Lynchburg Public Library. “They run two hospitals in the city, including all the rehabilitation and other services.” The commercial area of Westend was built between the 1950s and the 1980s with the expansion of E.C. Glass High School in 1953 and The Plaza, a once-prominent shopping center, seven years later. Centra Health was established in 1987 with the merger of the Lynchburg General Hospital and the Virginia Baptist Hospital and now serves as the main provider for most of Lynchburg.

Shopping and dining on Fort Avenue

“If anyone says The Plaza, anyone in Lynchburg knows exactly where that is,” says Wilson. The Plaza, a major landmark in the area, is a strip mall near E.C. Glass High School, which used to be a popular shopping location. “Once The Plaza opened up, that was the place to do your shopping,” says Wilson. “Then River Ridge mall opened, and lots of shops moved there.” The Plaza may not be the shopping hub it once was, but plenty of retail and quick-service dining options exist in and near the large strip mall. The commercial section of Westend consists mainly of stores, grocery stores and fast food restaurants. There are more restaurants along Fort Avenue, such as the Latin Place, which serves Puerto Rican food or The World Famous Stadium Inn, a bar and grill near the football stadium. Along Memorial Avenue, Bookshop on the Avenue sells used books in an Arts and Crafts style home. Dragon Fire Games hosts card game tournaments and sells gaming supplies. Groceries are available at Food Lion or F&L Market. Oakley Market and Restaurant sells a small selection of groceries and has a menu that includes burgers and sloppy joes.

Musicals and plays at E.C. Glass High

Children may attend Robert S. Payne Elementary School, which earns a B-minus from Niche. Linkhorne Middle School also receives a B-minus. E.C. Glass High School earns a B-plus. “One of the city’s two high schools is right next door,” says Wilson. “My parents went there, and I think it's been open for decades.” E.C. Glass offers students an in-depth art program and produces musicals and plays.

Minor league baseball at Bank of the James Stadium

“Miller Park Pool is a public pool run by the city,” says Wilson. The pool is diagonal to E.C. Glass High School and has the Miller Park Neighborhood Center which shares a building with the Lynchburg Parks & Recreation office. Spring Hill Cemetery, established in 1852, is deemed Lynchburg’s first rural cemetery and was designed to resemble a garden. The cemetery has paved paths for walking and studying the gravestones. Lynchburg’s minor league baseball team, the Hillcats, plays at the Bank of the James Stadium off Fort Avenue. Next door, local high schools play football at the Lynchburg City Stadium Football Field.

Snake feeding at Nature Zone

The Jones Memorial Library, part of the Lynchburg Public Library, preserves rare books and architectural plans and shares Lynchburg's stories, including family histories. Wilson says the Lynchburg Public Library offers storytimes for kids and tax help through AARP from February to April. The Nature Zone at the Miller Center houses reptiles, insects and arachnids for locals to experience and learn about. Snake feedings happen at 1 p.m. every Friday. Nearby houses of worship include Holy Trinity Orthodox Church, Lynchburg Korean Church and Providence Transformation Church.

GreatSchools: The GreatSchools Rating helps parents compare schools within a state based on a variety of school quality indicators and provides a helpful picture of how effectively each school serves all of its students. Ratings are on a scale of 1 (below average) to 10 (above average) and can include test scores, college readiness, academic progress, advanced courses, equity, discipline and attendance data. We also advise parents to visit schools, consider other information on school performance and programs, and consider family needs as part of the school selection process.
