Woodland's green spaces, maple trees

Although Randolph College sits on the northern edge of Woodland, this Lynchburg neighborhood is home to more than just students. People of all ages can find solace in this neighborhood that stays true to its name with large green spaces and tall maple trees. “A lot of people from different parts of the country move here,” says Martin Donovan, a Realtor with Lauren Bell Real Estate, who has over 30 years of experience in Lynchburg. “I like the diversity and charm it has. It’s not a cookie-cutter neighborhood.” The college offers lots of entertainment including speakers and theater performances.

Shrimpfest, SciFest

Downtown Lynchburg is 3 miles away and has plenty of coffee shops and small businesses along walkable streets. Randolph College hosts events inlcuding an annual Shrimpfest in July and a science festival, known as SciFest, in March.

'Great burgers," Saturday markets

The Cavalier Store, known to locals as "The Cav," is a classic dining option in Woodland. “I like the Cavalier Store; They have really great burgers,” says Aaliya Robertson, a Lynchburg resident who grew up in the city and still lives here. “They’ve been there for years and also have really good customer service.” Rivermont Pizza is another go-to spot, especially for college students, Robertson says. The Kroger on Boonsboro Road is the nearest grocery store, while the Lynchburg Community Market is a popular place to pick up local produce and baked goods. On Saturdays, the market has live music. “The downtown is very busy on Saturdays because of the market. You can get all the little things you need,” Donovan says.

Clubs at Linkhorne Middle

Before any thought of college, children can attend Linkhorne Elementary School, which earns a C from Niche. Kids can move on to Linkhorne Middle, which has many clubs including band and science clubs, and receives a B-minus. Students advance to E.C. Glass High School, which earns a B-plus from Niche and offers career-based programs. The nearest private school option is Virginia Episcopal School, less than 3 miles away. Churches in the neighborhood include First Christian Church, Rivermont Evangelical Presbyterian Church and Holy Trinity Lutheran Church. Even though it’s 8 miles away, many residents attend Thomas Road Baptist Church.

Cape Cods from $250,000

Potential buyers will find Cape Cods with small porches that range from $250,000 to $400,000 and larger, newly constructed traditional houses that range between $550,000 and $700,000. Lynchburg has an extreme risk of flooding since it’s near the river. The city stresses the importance of homeowners having flood insurance and has created the Lynchburg Rising: Beyond Survival to Environmental Justice program to help with flood preparation.

Hollins Mills Park, Oakwood Country Club

The James River is a well-known spot for fishing, canoeing and kayaking during the summer. People can do the same at Hollins Mills Park, which also has walking trails that lead through an old tunnel to an immersive waterfall. East Randolph Place Trailhead is a nearby 3-mile hiking trail. Oakwood Country Club is 2 miles away and the Boonsboro Country Club is 7 miles away.

Getting around town on U.S. Route 29

Woodland embraces its college atmosphere by being a walkable neighborhood. Robertson says she always sees a lot of people walking when she’s passing by. People can alternatively hop on U.S. Route 29 to get around. But when there are major events — like farmer’s markets on Saturdays — parking is scarce. “There’s really only on-street parking available,” Robertson says. There’s also a public bus service in Woodland, which helps people get to Lynchburg Regional Airport, just 10 miles away.
