A small tight-knit city, big on community

While it may fly under the radar of some of Southern Los Angeles’ flashier cities, Lynwood is at the heart of it all. A short drive from the beach, the vibrant city center, a variety of outdoor recreation and eclectic cuisine, Lynwood gives residents a unique suburban experience at a more affordable price than surrounding areas. Lynwood is a quiet residential area but takes pride in keeping it close and keeping residents engaged with initiatives, cultural festivals and city-wide events. “It’s a small city, but it’s very tight-knit, and there are a lot of multi-generational families who live here,” says Oliver Merchant, Recreation Coordinator for Lynwood Community Center for four years and local resident. “Lynwood has a really small-town, charming vibe, and you feel the love and support when you move in. It’s like a large family here.”

Affordable bungalows and ranchers

The city offers midcentury ranch-style homes, bungalows, a few larger modern homes and townhouses. Most were built in the late 1940s, ranging from $500,000 to $778,000. Palm-lined yards are well-kept and offer charming landscaping, and most have multi-car garages.

Latin flavors abound in Lynwood

Residents will love shopping at Plaza Mexico, the large retail and cultural center located off I-105. The plaza offers a variety of national and local shopping and dining options while also celebrating Mexican culture and architecture. The plaza also hosts regular celebrations, including Cinco de Mayo, Dia de los Muertos and Mexican Independence Day. Tweedy Boulevard is also home to an array of local shops and restaurants. Just as its plaza celebrates the city’s Mexican culture, the dining scene represents various Latin flavors. The 24-hour Lucy’s Restaurant is known for its huevos rancheros and chile relleno burritos. And Tacos Estilo Guadalajara serves up authentic Guadalajara-style street tacos. BALAM Mexican Kitchen and Salvadoran and Peruvian restaurant El Cielo are also local favorites. “There are a lot of really good options,” says Merchant. “El Asadero is a high-quality taqueria that I like to go to, and there’s an Italian spot that opened up called La Pasta that’s really good.” Satisfy that sweet tooth at La Favorita Bakery, which offers fruit-filled Mexican pastries, and get essentials at Superior Grocers or one of Lynwood’s family-run specialty markets.

Recreation, sports and educational programs for all

Lynwood Park, a 23-acre green space, offers three ballfields, three soccer fields, four tennis courts and an outdoor fitness zone. There’s also a 1-mile path, or residents can shred some payment at its skatepark. Shoot hoops, let the kids play or have a picnic at Adolfo Medina Park, and at Yvonne Burke John D. Ham Park, residents can pick from five exercise stations to work out, walk the trail or head to the park’s Lucy Avalos Community Center, which offers camps, recreation and educational programs. Kids will love the community artwork and two playgrounds at Ricardo Lara Linear Park. Bring furry companions here to play in its dog park or rent a plot in the community garden. After school, kids can entertain themselves at the Henning Youth Center, which offers a game room, basketball court and computer room, or the Lynwood Community Center, which caters to over 1,500 kids aged 5 to 18. “We have a big turnout with our sports program, it’s very popular here,” Merchant says. “A lot of people coming into the community center have either played sports in their youth and are now coaching or bringing their kids here. We have flag football, baseball, soccer and basketball, and our numbers have surpassed pre-pandemic numbers.”

The heart of Lynwood

Taking pride in its heritage and community, Lynwood engages residents with summer concerts, the annual Tamale Festival and Fiestas Patrias, an annual event close to the community’s heart, which celebrates Latin American culture with vendors, live performances and a variety of food. “People here support their community, and most of our events are free,” Merchant says. “From the Fourth of July fireworks show to the Halloween parade, we have great participation.”
