A township of new homes and Michigan’s oldest bar
There are many new developments throughout the Lyon Township, but this East Michigan community is still yet to outgrow its rural roots. The township is home to the oldest bar in Michigan, which opened in 1831, and its 200-acre apple orchard has been around since 1920. Surrounding these longstanding sites, new homes and subdivisions are being built fast, and the town’s population has more than doubled since 2000, surpassing 23,000 in 2020. “There’s a lot of new construction going on,” says Shelly Kovach, real estate adviser with Brookstone Realtors. “But it still has that small, community-type feeling.”

Large lots and modern homes
Lending to the town’s rural character, the median lot size in Lyon is just under half an acre. Craftsman homes and modern farmhouses characterize much of the new housing stock, and older homes might come in classic Colonial or ranch styles. Kovach, who’s been selling homes in the area for nine years, says prices are increasing with demand. “Median days-on-market is 12,” she says. “So houses are flying off the market. And now the median price is $556,955, up 8% from the previous year.” Ranch-style homes typically have lower price points, ranging from $110,000 to $440,000. Larger homes like classic Colonials and modern farmhouses can range from $330,000 to $1.7 million.

South Lyon and Northville school districts
According to the Lyon Township website, most residents are served by the South Lyon Community School District, but some homes may be a part of the Northville Public Schools District. South Lyon Community Schools has a student-teacher ratio of 19:1 and earns an overall A-minus on Niche, while Northville Public Schools maintains a ratio of 21:1 and earns an A-plus. The Northville district also beats out South Lyon in terms of SAT scores, with an average score of 1350 versus South Lyon’s average of 1230. Students can start at Sharon J. Hardy Elementary, which has an A on Niche, before moving on to Centennial Middle, which has a B-plus. South Lyon East High School has an A-minus.
Children can easily walk or bike to Dolsen Elementary School.
Hillside Middle School offers a dynamic learning environment.

Hooligan farm products and options for local dining
Residents can head to the neighboring town of South Lyon for its many local shops and restaurants, but Lyon is slowly attracting its share of local businesses. Catering to the area’s residents with large lots or farms, Hutson, Incorporated sells equipment like John Deere tractors and Stihl power tools. Nearby, The Shed at Hooligan Farms offers fresh farm products like Hooligan’s Goat Milk Soap, fresh eggs and Wild Bill’s Honey. Home cooks can stock up on groceries at Walmart on Lyon Center Drive or Kroger on Pontiac Trail. On nights when they’d rather not cook, residents can choose between restaurants like New Hudson Inn on Grand River Avenue—home of the oldest bar in Michigan—and Lyon Grill on Pontiac Trail.

Teeing off at Tanglewood
In the summer, greenery and sunshine are easy to come by in the township. The town and surrounding cities are replete with golf courses like Tanglewood, Lyon Oaks and Coyote Golf Club. The area is also home to an extensive network of trails and parks. Kensington Metropark and Lyon Oaks County Park are just a couple of options, offering waterside trails, play equipment and a dog park. To build out the area’s natural potential, cities in Oakland County have developed a plan to connect trails across cities so residents can bike, walk or run from one to the next.

Live music, kites and Christmas lights
Summer is an active time in Lyon, with Music on the Grand bringing live music to Inspiration Park every other week. In early summer, Lyon residents break out the paper and string for the Lyon Township International Kite Festival. Usually held around the Lyon Township Municipal Center on Grand River Avenue, this festival offers free kites for kids, kite decorating, live music and food vendors from around the area. In December, the town kicks off the holiday season with the annual Lighting Up the Grand festival at Inspiration Park.

The People’s Express
Interstate 96 runs through the north end of town and can take drivers east to downtown Detroit or west to Lake Michigan. The Suburban Mobility Authority for Regional Transportation bus system doesn’t quite reach Lyon, but the town participates in People’s Express, a program subsidizing residents' transportation costs. Space for biking and walking is pretty reasonable throughout town, as many of its streets are lined with sidewalks, though more rural roads may go without. The town is also woven through by a network of trails, which will soon connect to the trail systems of surrounding cities as well.
