Historic Baker County locale with small-town appeal
Tucked away about 30 miles west of Jacksonville is the small, historic town of Macclenny in Baker County. "A lot of people are finding out what I've known for a long time—it's a fantastic place to live," says City Manager Mike Griffis, a lifelong resident of Macclenny. Tall oak trees with Spanish moss canopy over neighborhood streets that pass decades-old brick buildings like Emily Taber Library. Local businesses have American flags on their wooden porches and nearby parks where residents have gatherings feature architecture from the town's beginnings inside intricate wrought iron fences. Griffis says the area is rapidly growing, but people in town still greet each other by name on the street. "We are protective of our rural character. We know it will grow, but we want to maintain our small-town feel as much as possible."

Their long driveways connect to gravel roads that travel further out of town. Outdoor fun at town parks
The small, charming Heritage Park Village takes a step back in time to 1850s "Darbyville," Macclenny's original name, with a collection of historical and re-created buildings from the town’s beginnings; visitors can check out Moonshine Museum and Garage to learn about illegal brewing in the town during prohibition and Paul's Rexal Drugs to read chronicles of Baker County's medical history. The area also features the town's original train depot, which features a red caboose. A rustic windmill sits beside the Burnsed Block-House, Florida's only surviving example of frontier architecture. Griffis says residents like to use the park's gazebo and playground for family reunions, and the salmon-colored village chapel with white French doors is ideal for weddings. Memorial Park, also known as the "duck pond," is another popular spot for locals to play pickleball and visit the dock on the pond.
