Sand and sun for residents and tourists

Referred to as Mad Beach by the locals, the Madeira Beach neighborhood is something of an island paradise for both year-round residents and tourists. “It’s a nice mix of residential neighborhoods and entertainment spaces,” says Associate Broker Mike Reichenbach with Century 21, who has almost 20 years of experience. Madeira Beach was named after the Portuguese island of Madeira, and the community motto reflects the island’s unique shape – "Two Miles Long and a Smile Wide." People can hang out by the waterfront for fun and entertainment, then head back to Crystal Island for quiet, comfortable living.

Million-dollar waterfront houses and duplexes

When it comes to housing, residents can avoid the bustle of tourists with their own little slice of paradise. “It’s an older community, so it has older buildings that are being remodeled, which gives it an eclectic mix of homes,” Reichenbach says. Most houses were built in either the ‘50s or early 2000s. According to Reichenbach, properties range from $3.5 million-dollar homes with 3,000 square feet to intercoastal houses and duplexes off the water. The most common housing types for the area are Spanish Revivals and traditional Florida-style homes. These properties are usually single-story, brightly painted and range in price from $400,000 to $700,000 for 1,000 square feet. Large, multi-level beach houses right on the water are built with garages underneath and wrap-around porches.

Sunbathing, playing sports and exploring Maderia Beach

There are plenty of parks and outdoor amenities in Madeira Beach for people to soak up the picturesque surroundings. “People come to Florida for the beaches of course, and Madeira beaches have nice access points away from the busier areas,” Reichenback says. The public Madeira Beach Access offers 450 feet of shoreline for a premier sunbathing spot by the ocean. For a quaint beach experience with fewer tourists, try getting in the water at Tom and Kitty Stuart Park. Additionally, R.O.C. Park is a waterfront memorial park with a pier, splash pad, playground, dog park, butterfly garden and multiple sports fields that will keep people entertained for hours. Down the street, Archibald Beach Park is great for picnicking. Grab some fuel at the Snack Shak before joining a pick-up volleyball game. John’s Pass Park is located just across the street from the boardwalk and is a great location for fishing. For fun on the water, book a charter boat with Fish 2TheMax or Hubbard’s Marina to experience dolphins, sunsets, offshore fishing and more. Captains who are native to the area know the best spots to explore – John’s Pass Sandbar is a popular gathering place for local boaters to dock and relax at a small stretch of knee-deep water far out from the shore.

Shops on John’s Pass and restaurants on Gulf

Madeira Beach is a travel destination for shopping, dining and entertainment. John’s Village is located at the southern end of the neighborhood and has over 100 businesses and amenities to enjoy; “John's Pass,” as locals call it, is the number one tourist attraction in Pinellas County. The boardwalk-style beachfront shopping haven has everything from typical tourist souvenir shops to Zeno’s Boardwalk Sweet Shop and Made in the Shade sunglasses store. Watch dolphins jump from the patios of waterside restaurants or spend a relaxing evening on a pirate ship or floating tiki excursion.

When it comes to shopping for essentials, Carter Plaza shopping mall is at the other end of Madeira Beach and has Winn-Dixie for groceries. There’s also a CVS for medications and Dollar Tree for anything else. Those who would rather eat out for dinner can head to Mad Beach Cantina, where they serve modern Mexican cuisine and invite guests to build their own margaritas. Daiquiri Shak Raw Bar & Grill boasts over 30 flavors of daiquiris, along with fresh oysters, chicken wings and their famous blue cheese dressing. It’s also a great place for local entertainment with live music that covers everything from regional reggae to top 40 bands. Anyone craving seafood will be satisfied with Dockside Dave’s comfort food, specializing in fresh grouper sandwiches and platters. Top off the night with a sweet treat from Candy Kitchen, a family-owned sweet shop from the 50s serving homemade ice cream, fudge and candies. Those who want to enjoy the area’s nightlife can find themselves at Bamboo Beach Bar, or “The Boo,” one of Florida’s oldest bars and a popular spot for Madeira Beach residents.

Walkable streets and Madeira’s main road

Getting around Madeira Beach is simple. Gulf Boulevard, also known as Blind Pass Road, is the main road that goes up and down the coast and connects Madeira Beach with surrounding beaches. As a pedestrian-friendly area, most people will either walk to nearby restaurants and attractions or hop on one of the many bus stops along Gulf. Tourists and commuters can access the mainland through the Tom Stuart Causeway, which will then connect them to US Route 19 and the rest of Clearwater.
