Downtown Madera
Bungalows, minimal traditionals and renting opportunities
The neighborhood’s gridded streets are densely packed with bungalows and minimal traditional homes, many of which are rental properties. Some houses were built from the mid-1910s through the 1940s, and others were erected from the early 1960s to 1990. There were two waves of construction, homes built later were designed to match previous styles. Minimal traditional home prices range from $235,000 to $380,000, whereas bungalows cost between $225,000 and $330,000. “Downtown is mixed because there is some residential with an open option of commercial; that’s a plus because people can run a business out of them,” Ramos says.Local retail and dining on Yosemite Avenue and national stores nearby
Many locally owned clothing shops line Yosemite Avenue. Popular thrift stores include, Ortiz Western Wear and Rocio’s Bridal, which specializes in wedding and quinceañera dresses. Restaurants along this road range from Los Tres Reyes (Three Kings Bakery), with breads and sweet treats, to California Grill, serving American fare and pastas. Tijuana’s Bar & Grill—or “TJ’s”—has two vibes, inside is like an industrial sports bar with multiple televisions, and the outside patio is laid-back with string lights hovering over tables and a courtyard fountain. International grocers, such as El Mercado Market, are also near Yosemite Avenue. National supermarkets, such as Grocery Outlet, are about 2 miles away in shopping centers with major retailers, such as Marshalls. Many CTE pathways and schools in the Madera Unified School District
Madera Unified School District serves the area. Many residences are zoned for Sierra Vista Elementary School, which earns a C-minus grade from Niche. Martin Luther King Jr. Middle School scores a C and the C-plus-graded Madera South High School has an Agricultural department for Career and Technical Education (CTE) courses, ranging from welding to animal science.Renovated park space, a pool complex and a youth center
Green space is limited to a few blocks in Downtown Madera. In September 2024, Courthouse Park received a new nature-themed playground, outdoor fitness station and renovated walking paths. The John W. Wells Youth Center is in Centennial Park, where there is a pool complex that the public can access with a general admission fee of about $1 to $2, as well as with the purchase of a season pass for between $40 and $85, depending on age.Taking public transit and driving down Golden State Highway
Golden State Highway runs northwest and southeast through Downtown Madera, connecting it to Fresno. The Fresno Yosemite International Airport is about a 30-mile drive and provides nonstop flights to cities nationwide and Mexico. Madera Metro has various fixed routes across the city, including the purple and green lines, which overlap on Yosemite Avenue and go to shopping centers and medical offices.Surrounding areas at higher risk of wildfires
Considering the surrounding area, outskirts are at a heightened risk of potential wildfires. With a densely packed street grid, if they were to reach the Downtown Madera area, The City of Madera Fire Department has a station nearby prepared to combat them.
