Near downtown, East Madera offers an urban feel in a residential area
East Madera’s residential streets and Latino-owned businesses are between farmland, government offices and Downtown Madera. The neighborhood has an urban feel, according to local Marisela Ramos, a Realtor with Real Broker since early 2022. “East Madera is populated, developed and a gateway to the Yosemites.” Natural open space is limited to fields in the far east region; however, recreation is accessible at parks in the community.
Older homes near downtown and younger homes farther east
Located near Downtown Madera, minimal traditional homes line numbered and lettered streets. Many homes are single-story, and were built between the 1940s and 1970s, and feature adobe exteriors painted with neutral colors. Prices range from $160,000 to $345,000. Some communities in the northeastern and southeastern regions were constructed after 1980 and include new traditional architecture. Homes span one to two stories; many have terracotta roofs and adobe siding, and go for $375,000 to $565,000.
Mexican restaurants, grocery shopping and Downtown Madera
Mexican restaurants are scattered across East Madera, including Cheles Tacos and Grill and Emma’s Taqueria y Carniceria. Marantha has a yellow and red checkerboard walk-up window for to-go Mexican meals. The Crossroads shopping center has a Rancho San Miguel Market and other various fast food restaurants nearby. “Downtown has many great [dining] options. Jill & Jill is up-and-coming. They have pizza, desserts, and it’s a cake shop too,” Ramos says.
Schools in Madera Unified’s eastern region and CTE course sectors
The Madera Unified School District serves the neighborhood. Virginia Lee Rose Elementary School is a kindergarten through sixth-grade school, and Martin Luther King Jr. Middle School, for seventh- and eighth-grade, both earn C grades from Niche. Madera South High School receives a C-plus. The school also offers Career and Technical Education (CTE) courses, ranging from public service to the agriculture and natural resources sector.
Playgrounds and athletic fields, from parks to the sports complex
Neighborhood parks are between residential streets, such as Knox Park, which has a playground with a rock wall and a soccer field. Nearby, McNally Park also has a playground, volleyball and basketball courts. Madera Sunrise Rotary Sports Complex spans over 48 acres with baseball and soccer fields.
Walkable streets, Madera Metro and drives from Yosemite to Fresno
State Highway 145 runs through downtown’s center, where it is locally known as “Yosemite Avenue.” The CA-145 connects the area to Yosemite National Park, about 60 miles away. “Close to downtown is walkable, and there’s local transportation if they choose, but that’s more so if going from one side [of Madera] to the other,” Ramos says. Madera Metro is the local bus service that runs along thoroughfares, such as Sunrise Avenue. Golden State Highway travels through the western region of East Madera, tying the area to Fresno, roughly 25 miles away. The Fresno Yosemite International Airport, with its direct flights to cities in Mexico and the United States, is about a 30-mile drive along the Golden State Highway.
Madera County’s plan against wildfires
The area surrounding the neighborhood may be at elevated risk of wildfires. The Madera Country Sheriff's Office of Emergency Services established a 2023 Community Wildfire Protection Plan in which evacuation routes and other safety measures were established.
