North Madera was developed with minimal traditional homes built near downtown between the 1930s and 1950s, and are priced between $185,000 and $315,000. New traditional homes, many established to the north after 2000, with attached garages and one to two stories, range between $310,000 and $440,000. Ranch-style homes were built in the 1950s and fetch between $255,000 and $390,000. Manufactured homes go for $30,000 to $130,000. El Toro Loco Supermarket, a grocer with imported Mexican products, as well as locally owned restaurants is on North D Street. Dining options include Taqueria Chavinda with carry-out and Fastway Chicken, a family owned restaurant, serving fried chicken since 1978. Restaurant chains and national retailers are concentrated along Country Club Drive and Cleveland Avenue. Madera Marketplace has a Walmart and a Ross Dress for Less. The Commons at the Madera Fair has a Lowe’s and fast food chain restaurants, such as Chipotle. Nearby, the Madera Flea Market opens on Wednesdays and Sundays from early mornings to mid-afternoons. “It is filled with many local vendors, bringing yummy food, fruits, vegetables and so much more you can't find at a regular store,” Ramos says.Movie screens and speeding cars
To the neighborhood’s west, the family owned Movies Madera theater and the Madera Drive-In both have showings of the latest movie releases. “The Drive-In is one of the last standing in the state. It has been a staple and family tradition for decades,” Ramos says. Nearby, cars race around the short track at the Madera Speedway from March to November. “During the season, the speedway is a fan favorite, and people come from all over the place to race and spectate,” she says.Zoned schools and student sports in the Madera Unified School District
In the open-enrollment school district of Madera Unified, five elementary schools, three middle schools and three high schools serve the neighborhood. Nishimoto Elementary School is a kindergarten through sixth-grade school for which students in the west region are zoned. Niche grades it a C overall. Jack G. Desmond Middle School, for seventh and eighth graders, also receives a C. Matilda Torres High School earns a B-minus and its campus is home to an Olympic-sized swimming pool and a multipurpose stadium for student-athletes.Trails, parks with playgrounds and the Pan-American Community Center
Cyclists can follow a paved trail parallel to Riverside Drive, which meets Gateway Drive and Rotary Park in the west. The park has reservable pavilions near its dog park, playground and the Zero Gravity Skatepark. Nearby, Benches overlook Pan-American Park’s playgrounds, one of which is designed for preschool-aged children and the other for elementary school children. Sidewalks loop around the play area and go to a basketball court and the Pan-American Community Center. “Pan-American Park is a great family park and also a great location to host community and private events in a designated building,” Ramos says.Commutes to Fresno, cycling routes and climate concerns
Downtown Madera is about a mile south of the neighborhood. Golden State Highway connects North Madera to Fresno. It leads around 30 miles to the Fresno Yosemite International Airport, which provides direct flights to Mexico and United States cities. Madera Metro connects the region to other Madera communities with bus stops along Cleveland Avenue, which also has a designated bike lane.The area, due to its dry climate, may be at a potential risk of wildfires. The City of Madera Fire Department monitors weather conditions to implement evacuation orders promptly.
