Burr Oaks is a small community with access to plenty of conveniences
Burr Oaks is a small and tightly packed neighborhood situated at the crossroads of Park Street and U.S. Route 18, making it a gateway to both Downtown Madison and West Side retail. Single-family homes mix with apartments and multi-family housing. Nearby food and shopping options are diverse. The UW—Madison Arboretum provides an outlet for outdoor activities.

Ranch-style and multi-family homes can be hard to find on the market
Mostly developed in the 1940s, Burr Oaks is almost entirely residential. The small community’s limited housing stock, together with the abundance of apartments, means that homes rarely come on the market. “It’s a sweet little neighborhood, lovely for walking,” says Matt Silvern, a Realtor with Restaino & Associates Realtors. “The homes are going to be a little bit older and smaller.” Single-family homes have sold from the high $200,000s to the mid-$300,000s, while a multi-family property recently sold for $505,000. Most single-family residences are ranch-styles, although a handful of contemporary and split-level builds add some variety. Burr Oaks’ median home sale price of $320,000 is well below neighboring Bay Creek ’s $432,000 and Fitchburg's $475,000.

Mercado Miramar, which sells imported Mexican goods

K-Food Market, where shoppers can pick up Korean groceries
Park Road includes plenty of Mexican restaurants, including Los Atlantes Restaurant & Bakery and El Pastor Mexican Restaurant, locally known for its smoothie-sized margaritas. Fish Hatchery Road includes Licari’s Bar & Grill—a go-to for Friday fish fries—and the Parkway Family Restaurant, a diner that’s open from the crack of dawn until 4 PM.

Highway access connects Burr Oaks to major conveniences
Burr Oaks’ location along Park Street means that drivers are almost a straight shot from Downtown Madison, 3 miles to the north. Metro Transit’s B-line bus uses the same route for its half-hour journey. Cyclists can make use of the Wingra Creek Bike Path, Shore Drive along Monona Bay or the Capital City Trail along Lake Monona for a scenic ride to the heart of the city. “There’s not a lot of services within the neighborhood itself, but within a short drive, you’re really close to Park Street and the Beltline,” Silvern says. “Close to hospitals and to downtown and the university; it’s kind of a nice access point for that.” Health care is close by at SSM Health’s St. Mary’s Hospital, 2 miles up Fish Hatchery Road.

The Arboretum and youth sports are major draws
Because of the neighborhood’s small size, its outdoor spaces are limited to Lincoln Elementary School’s playground and the Cypress Spray Park next door. However, Duane F. Bowman Park is less than a mile away, and its three softball fields and one baseball diamond regularly host youth and adult leagues. “Madison, in general, is a huge athletic and outdoor activity community,” Silvern says. “We rank very high nationally for healthy living and outdoor life. Youth sports are very big here at all levels, both from competitive as well as simple club teams.” The neighborhood is also around 2 miles from the University of Wisconsin—Madison Arboretum’s eastern trailheads. “The Arboretum is a huge draw,” Silvern says. “It’s good all year round, and it’s well-maintained.” The Arboretum’s nearly 20 miles of trails let hikers and cyclists immerse themselves in preserved wetlands, prairies, woodlands and other natural habitats where wildlife still roam. Birdwatchers will have plenty of species to behold, including bald eagles.
