Ranch-style homes coexist with brick apartments
A blend of brick apartment complexes and ranch-style houses populate the streets of Burr Oaks. Most single-family homes line Hackberry Lane and Sequoia Trail, within walking distance of Lincoln Elementary. These wide roads are framed by sidewalks and dappled with the shade provided by mature trees. Though there are some split-level and two-story homes, ranch-style houses with a mix of brick and wood exteriors are the most common here. These single-level homes tend to come with attached garages and enough room on the lawn for neatly landscaped flowers or hedges. Asking prices start at around $200,000 and rarely climb above $500,000, with the median price for the area sitting at about $250,000.Cool off at Cypress Splash Park
On hot summer days, families can walk over to Cypress Splash Park to cool off in the water. Even as the months turn colder, the park features a playground for year-round fun. To the north, Duane F. Bowman Park is popular for hosting youth baseball and softball games. Burr Oaks is also about a mile away from the Martin Street entrance to the University of Wisconsin-Madison Arboretum. With 17 miles of trails through forests, wetlands and prairies, it’s a great spot for hiking and snowshoeing through the native flora and fauna. Lake Wingra sits at the heart of the arboretum and provides kayak and paddleboard rentals for on-the-water activity.A highly regarded local elementary school
Families can send their kids to Madison Metropolitan Schools, starting out from kindergarten through the second grade at Midvale Elementary, which scores a B-plus from Niche. Burr Oaks students in grades three through five are within walking distance of Lincoln Elementary. “It’s a dual-language school, and it’s very highly regarded,” Cooper says. The school, which Niche awards a B-minus rating, features two new playgrounds completed for the 2022-2023 school year, including unique equipment like a warped wall. Lincoln Elementary sends kids on to Cherokee Heights Middle, which earns a B grade. For high school, families can choose between one of four schools in the area. The closest is West High, an A-rated school, according to Niche, that is well-known for its STEM-based extracurriculars. The Madison West Rocket Club and the Madison West Science Olympiad team have both placed in national tournaments.Businesses along busy South Park Street
South Park Street borders Burr Oaks to the east and is home to fast food chains and local restaurants alike, alongside convenience shops and specialty Asian and Latin American grocers. “South Park Street has several great Mexican restaurants,” says Kemp, referring to eateries such as El Pastor. The local Pick ‘n Save, just over a mile away, provides other everyday goods. More dining options can be found lining Fish Hatchery Road, including local standby Parkway, known for its greasy breakfast fare served in a diner atmosphere. To the south near Fitchburg, there’s a Great Dane Pub and Brewing Co. location, a Madison favorite for craft beer. Barbecue lovers will want to hop next door to the Thirsty Goat, which also has a hefty selection of draft pours in addition to its slow-cooked meats.Reach the Capitol in 10 minutes by car or catch the Metro Transit bus
Bordered by the West Beltline Highway to the south and busy South Park Street to the east, residents of Burr Oaks have options for quickly getting around the Madison area. Downtown is between 3 and 4 miles away, and Metro Transit buses along South Park Street run north to Capitol Square. Alliant Energy Center, just 2 miles east, is a popular destination for concerts, sporting events and conventions. From Burr Oaks, residents can quickly get to the University of Wisconsin-Madison and even Dane Regional Airport, about a 9-mile trip north, or a roughly 20-minute drive.Local library and farmers market at Villager Shopping Center
The Madison Public Library’s Goodman South Madison branch is located in the Villager Shopping Center. In addition to its selection of books, the library hosts events, from Toddler & Me Storybook Yoga to Friday Family Films. On Saturday afternoons from June to October, residents can support local vendors at the South Madison Farmers’ Market in the lots adjacent to the library. Wares for sale range from fresh produce and flowers to baked goods and clothing.
