Southwest Madison neighborhood near Epic Systems and Ice Age Trail
Country Grove consists of about 300 homes on Madison’s southwest side, tucked near the fast-growing community of Verona, home to Epic Systems, a major area employer. Developed in the 1990s, the neighborhood also offers convenient proximity to nature areas, including a segment of Wisconsin’s Ice Age National Scenic Trail. An active neighborhood association plans events and activities to foster community and encourage connections among neighbors. Access to major thoroughfares and bike paths, plus local chains, round out the distinct features of this small Madison neighborhood.
Recent builds showcase an architectural variety
Largely built in the 1990s, homes in Country Grove feature a range of architectural designs, including midcentury modern elements like gently pitched roofs and ribbon windows as well as Colonial Revival designs, highlighting classic symmetry and shuttered windows. New Traditional is another common home design. The Country Grove Neighborhood Association does have an architectural covenant and requires reviews on certain landscaping decisions, such as fences, solar panels and pools. Attached garages are key during the winter months while the ample lawns and well-kept sidewalks are handy for summertime strolls. Most address offer, at least, 2,000 square feet and prices range from $415,000 to $690,000.

Spanish immersion and planetarium among unique educational features
Students can attend Cesar Chavez Elementary School, which earns a B-plus on Niche. “Chavez is known as a fairly good elementary school and they have a Spanish-immersion program there as well, which a lot of people are interested in,” says Keith Schulz, managing broker at Great Rock Realty. Niche awards Akira Toki Middle School a B-minus, and Vel Phillips Memorial High School earns an A. In addition to a range of athletics and AP classes, Memorial hosts a large theater program and the Madison Metropolitan School District’s planetarium, which provides multimedia immersive experiences for both students and the public.

The Country Grove Neighborhood Association plans community events
The Country Grove Neighborhood Association can be joined voluntarily for a small fee. The group works with city officials on the safety of Country Grove, and plans and hosts neighborhood events such as an Easter Egg Hunt and a 4th of July parade in which local kids decorate bikes and wagons and follow a fire truck from Country Grove Park. Larger events in Verona, Fitchburg and Madison are also easy to get to from Country Grove. At Verona’s Hometown Days Festival, residents can ride carnival rides and check out live local music during a June weekend. Verona also hosts a Wednesday afternoon farmers market from May to October. For a larger market experience — in fact America’s largest producer-only market — the Dane County Farmers Market has surrounded Madison’s Capitol Square on Saturdays since the 1970s. Fitchburg’s McKee Farms Park hosts a free summer concert series called Concerts at McKee.
Ice Age National Scenic Trail and a large soccer complex
People can play soccer and ultimate frisbee on the fields or shoot hoops at the basketball court at Country Grove Park. For hiking, the neighborhood enjoys proximity to the Ice Age Trail Junction Area, part of the Ice Age National Scenic Trail. Administered by the National Park Service, this trail stretches across Wisconsin for 1,200 miles, following the unique landscape of kettles, moraines and other glacial features formed during the last Ice Age. Nearby Reddan Soccer Park hosts competitions of all sorts. “The Division I College Ultimate Frisbee Championships were just there, which was really cool,” says Keith Sayles, a longtime Madison resident and attorney with Community Justice, Inc., a nonprofit law firm. SwimWest provides an indoor swimming pool for colder months and offers swimming lessons for children. “It’s a really excellent program for actually teaching kids to swim properly. Their instructors work with two or three kids at a time.”
Ice Age Trail is a great place to escape into naure.

Short commute to Epic and plenty of options for cyclists
Country Grove’s location is a major selling point. “It’s just outside Verona, which a lot of people like,” says Schulz. Verona has evolved enormously in recent years, to the tune of over 50% growth between 2010 and 2020. This is due in large part to the presence of Epic Systems, who employs over 10,000 people, second only to the University of Wisconsin in the Madison metro area. Epic’s massive and unique Verona campus, with themed buildings inspired by works like "The Wizard of Oz" and "20,000 Leagues Under the Sea," is a 4-mile commute down Cross Country Road from the neighborhood. Cyclists can access a dense network of trails and bike lanes, including a paved path that runs along busy McKee Road and the Military Ridge State Trail. US Route 18 runs nearby and connects to Madison’s Beltline Highway, allowing access to the whole metro area.
