Hilltop views, trails, and access to Madison culture
Maple-Prairie is a suburban neighborhood at Madison’s southwestern edge, perched on a hill not far from the smaller Wisconsin towns of Fitchburg, Verona and Oregon. “You’ve got Madison metro right there, so you have all the city things that you need, but you’re close enough to nature,” says Becky Funk, real estate agent with First Weber Real Estate Services. That city convenience, plus the nearby green spaces, prairie preserves and lengthy trails for hiking and biking all contribute to this neighborhood’s character.

Scenic views and architectural variety
Most of the neighborhood was built in the 1990s, and single-family homes make up most of Maple-Prairie. The hilly location, once rolling farmland, allows for scenic views from some porches and back patios. Popular styles are ranch and Colonial Revival designs, with other homes showcasing midcentury modern elements like ribbon windows and gently pitched roofs. Yards are spacious and well-manicured, and sturdy trees provide shade and atmosphere. Most homes feature garages and off-street parking. Prices range from $300,000 to $500,000.

Easy access to for commuters
Maple-Prairie is bordered by busy McKee Road, a major thoroughfare connecting Verona, Fitchburg, and Madison’s south side. The neighborhood is 10 miles from downtown Madison, and 4 miles from Verona, home of Epic Systems, a major area employer, so commuters have convenient access to both. For travel lovers, the Dane County Regional Airport lies 21 miles away and offers flights to major Midwestern airport hubs such as O’Hare, Detroit, and Minneapolis. Madison is generally bike-friendly, as well, with bike lanes and paved bike trails throughout the city. Still, in this specific area, most people get around via car.
Year-round outdoor fun at local parks
Elver Park bustles with activity year-round. In summer, people play the popular 18-hole disc golf course that winds through woods and prairie while youth soccer and pick-up basketball games are played nearby. In winter, cross-country skiers fly on city-maintained trails, skaters whirl at the ice rink, and sledders rush down one of the biggest and most popular hills in town. Smaller Maple Prairie Park, right in the neighborhood, offers a playground and multi-purpose fields. To explore a restored Wisconsin habitat, Maddie Smith, Community Education Coordinator with the University of Wisconsin Arboretum suggests the Grady Tract area of the Arb. "It’s such a magical area but you have to work a little harder to get there. Really amazing restored oak savannah with beautiful wildflowers and these oaks that are just ancient and gnarled," Smith says. Film buffs can take in big screen movies at the AMC IMAX theater on McKee Road.

For a real taste of Wisconsin's German influence, residents shop at Bavaria Sausage or sip German-style beers at the Fitchburg location of the local Great Dane Pub & Brewing Co. The Dane’s several locations offers two free pitchers to each of the 170-plus Madison Summer League Ultimate Frisbee teams, so some summer nights can get crowded.
