Newer construction among rolling hills on Madison’s east side
A newer addition to Madison, the Ridgewood neighborhood consists of contemporary single-family homes on the city's east side, adjacent to a growing retail area. Developed in the 1990s and 2000s in response to Madison’s surging population, Ridgewood is located just south of East Towne Mall. “I used to live there,” says Ali Kane, a broker associate with Stark Company Realtors. “Ridgewood was my jam back in the day. It was great because I was so close to everything.” The convenience, newer builds and the neighborhood’s hilly topography are key factors in Ridgewood’s appeal.

Hilly landscape influences Ridgewood home designs
Despite it’s relative youth, homes in Ridgewood come in various styles, partly because of the hilly streets. “I love the topography in that neighborhood specifically,” Kane says. “It’s not just your 90s-built, random plain-Jane stuff; they had to get creative with their tri-levels and bi-levels, the two stories with exposed lower levels. They had to really play into those hills.” In addition to the multi-level properties, ranch-style homes and Colonial Revival designs are prominent. Prices range from $350,000 to $535,000 for single-family homes. Condos on the westside of the neighborhood can cost between $225,000 and $265,000. The neighborhood holds a CAP Index crime score of 6, higher than the national average of 4.
Neighborhood model builds community at East High School
Students living north of Hazelcrest Drive can attend Hawthorne Elementary, which Niche grades a C-plus. Sherman Middle School earns a B-minus and feeds into East High School, which earns a B-plus. East High uses a neighborhood model to help students connect with faculty and staff and each other in smaller learning communities.
Schenk Elementary serves students south of Hazelcrest Drive and earns a C-plus. Whitehorse Middle School, which earns a B-minus, feeds into La Follette High School, which scores a B. La Follette has recently undergone a significant renovation, updating the gym, performing arts facilities and classrooms.

Convenience and highway access are key features in Ridgewood
Major roads and highways surround Ridgewood. “Stoughton Road, Highway 30 and the Interstates 90 and 94 are all easily accessible,” says Matt Deadman, a Realtor and broker associate with Real Broker LLC. Heading to Milwaukee, Chicago or northern Wisconsin is a quick jump onto the interstate. Buses run along Thompson Drive. Downtown Madison is about 7 miles away via East Washington Avenue. The nearest hospital is UW Health’s East Hospital, about 5 miles north. The Dane County Regional Airport is also about 5 miles away.
Ultimate Frisbee takes flight at Glacier Hill Park
Sycamore Park is a large, open expanse with soccer fields and a designated dog park. Glacier Hill Park, named for the source of Ridgewood’s unique topography, is home to a sledding hill, walking trails and a scenic overlook. “It’s a huge park, with lots of activities happening. People play Ultimate there a lot,” Kane says, referring to MUFA, the Madison Ultimate Frisbee Association, whose popular summer league has swollen to 170 teams, drawing 3,500 Madisonians to parks across the city each summer. The neighborhood is close to a Flix Brewhouse Theater and Bowl-A-Vard bowling alley near East Towne Mall.
East Towne Mall and Global Market and Food Hall provide lots of options
Ridgewood residents are close to various shopping and dining establishments, though most of those options are just outside the neighborhood. “You kind of have to leave to go anywhere,” Kane says. “But holy East Towne Mall opportunities over there. You’re minutes away from Target, Michaels, Culvers and all of East Towne.” There are several nearby grocery options, including a Hy-Vee on East Washington Avenue and an Aldi on Lien Road. Woodman’s Food Market is under 3 miles away on Milwaukee Street. “Global Market and Food Hall has a huge range of cuisine,” Kane says. “And opportunities to shop for very specific things. It’s really cool.” The Boneyard is a dog park and biergarten where residents can bring their four-legged friends to socialize while sipping draft beer.

The Boneyard hosts events for humans and dogs
The Boneyard hosts residents and their canine companions for trivia, live music, and traditional Wisconsin events like meat raffles and euchre, a card game, tournaments. Downtown Madison hosts the Dane County Farmers Market throughout the year, the largest producer-only market in the country. Residents can pop on Highway 151 to Sun Prairie for the Sweet Corn Festival in August.
