Outdoorsy community in the North Seattle suburbs

Maltby is a secluded exurb in south Snohomish County that offers spacious homes surrounded by nature, including multiple hiking areas and the Snohomish River. “It’s a little bit of country that’s close to everything,” says Eva Bryce, a Real Estate Marketing Specialist with Century 21. The semi-rural community is mostly made up of residential properties, farmland and a few small businesses. While it doesn’t have much in the way of retail, it’s just a short drive from Maltby to Monroe and Woodinville, which both have vibrant downtown areas.

A variety of homes overlooking trees and farms

Towering Douglas firs and other evergreen trees line the roads throughout Maltby, providing a scenic forested landscape for homes in the area. The housing market is made up of midcentury ranch-style homes and more spacious modern properties, including a number of luxury homes. A few more budget-friendly manufactured homes can also be found around the community. Large yards are common, and many homes throughout the community sit on an acre or more of land. “People move out here for the space,” says Bryce. “Your commute might be a bit longer but you can really stretch your legs.” The median price for a single-family home in Maltby is a little over $1.2 million. Policing in Maltby is overseen by the Snohomish County Sheriff’s Office, but crime data for the area is not readily available.

The iconic Maltby Café, housed in a former schoolhouse, is just down the road from the market and is known for its large cinnamon rolls and homestyle breakfasts. Woodinville's summer concert series

Woodinville and Monroe also host most of the major events and festivals in the area. Woodinville’s Summer Concert Series draws large crowds during warmer months and offers not just music but a variety of food and drink vendors. Monroe, meanwhile, is home to the Evergreen State Fairgrounds, where the Snohomish County Fair is held every August.

Connecting to Greater Seattle via Route 522

Cars are are a necessity for most Maltby residents, with no public transit directly serving the area. State Route 522 and Highway 9 provide connections to Woodinville, Bothell and Monroe, which are all within 10 miles. Commuting to Seattle is also fairly common for area residents; it’s just 25 miles to downtown, though drive times can skyrocket during rush hour, or whenever accidents block traffic on either of the Lake Washington bridges.
