Most kids in Whittier Oaks attend Milford Brook School, but some students might go to Clark Mills School. Both elementary schools feed into Manapalan-Englishtown Middle School. All three schools earn A-minus ratings from Niche. Manalapan High School also gets an A-minus, but some students apply to High Technology High School in Freehold, a vocational school that gets an A-plus. "When COVID came in, everything changed," Kurlander says. "So what happened is people were working from home, but now they’re going in to work, but they may only go in two days a week if they work in the city. Those who are commuting aren’t commuting five days a week." When commuters need to reach Newark, they drive around 34 miles down Route 9, which often takes under an hour. The highway also guides drivers 42 miles to New York City. NJ Transit buses also make stops along Route 9. Some passengers take the bus to the Freehold Raceway Mall. There are diverse places of worship around Whittier Oaks, but the Union Hill Congregation synagogue is in the immediate area, off Union Hill Road.From Italian at Nonna's Cucino to coffee at California Cold Co.
"I got out into the area in 1980, and it doesn’t compare to what it is today," Kurlander says. "We had very little. We didn’t have supermarkets, shopping or restaurants. Once everyone started coming from the city, Brooklyn, and Staten Island, we got flooded with restaurants and shopping. We have some of the greatest supermarkets in the state, and we have some really wonderful restaurants as well." Pastosa Ravioli is a small store that sells specialty items like pasta and handmade sauce, but most people drive down Route 9 to shop at Netcost Market or up to Whole Foods in Marlboro Commons. Close to home, Dusal's Italian Restaurant and Pizzeria is popular for a sit-down lunch or to order out. Nonna's Cucina off Route 9 is an upscale Italian dinner spot where people can host parties or make reservations for date night. California Cold Co. in the Home Fashion Center has a menu of hot teas and custom coffees.Maple Leaf Farms is a seasonal destination
Maple Leaf Farms is a garden center and country store right outside Whittier Oaks that opens seasonally. Everything sold at the store is grown on 300 acres behind the building. The country store is always stocked with locally made items, from small-batch candy to handcrafted wind chimes. During the winter, people across the township and beyond walk through the farm’s Christmas Wonderland, which is often full of vintage decoration displays, train rides, and Santa visits.Community parks near home
Hawkins Road Park is a small green space in Whitter Oaks with fenced-in tennis courts and a playground close to the parking lot. The paved walking trail circles the courts and cuts through a wooded area to two basketball courts and another playground. The nearby public Pine Brook Golf Course has 18 holes and a landscape made for a relaxed round of golf. In the south half of the township, the Monmouth Battlefield State Park has historic walking trails and an annual recreation of the Battle of Monmouth. The Manalapan Recreation Center is the largest green space, with athletic fields, a splash pad and space for the always-popular Manalapan Day festival in June.
