Cul-de-sacs, houses old and new
On the outskirts of Manchester, bordering the rural community of Goffstown, is Northwest Manchester, a neighborhood of winding streets and wooded hikes. Connected to the rest of the west side and downtown by Dunbarton and Goffstown roads, the Northwest is a residential area with a rustic feel on the edge of New Hampshire’s largest city. Single-family homes from the early 20th century, apartments and brand-new townhouses in planned subdivisions are available. “There are some new developments where you can start in a townhouse and end up in a nursing home,” says William Kanteres, broker at Kanteres Real Estate in New Hampshire. “It’s a community that provides housing for all different phases of life, from first homes to a retirement village.”
In the Northwest part of Manchester you can find newer developments.

Largest forest in the city
The neighborhood is anchored by the Manchester Cedar Swamp Preserve, a 640-acre forest and the largest conservation area in the city. The forest has nearly 2 miles of trails, including the universally accessible, ADA-compliant All Persons Trail. The preserve is a popular place to hike through the woods. Atlantic white cedar swamps, patches of rhododendrons and black gum trees line its forested walkways. Because it’s a wildlife habitat, however, dogs are not allowed.

Rustic or urban feel?
North of the preserve, in a tiny sliver of Manchester next to the Goffstown border, are upscale houses in cul-de-sac subdivisions with rolling front lawns underneath tall trees. The area south of the preserve feels more traditionally Manchester, with its saltboxes and Cape Cods on small lots sitting right next to each other. It’s residential, but it doesn’t have the suburban or rural feel exuded by the area closer to Goffstown. Home prices in Northwest Manchester can range from $173,000 to $845,000.

Locals fish at Blodget Park near the Merrimack and relax in the park’s open green space.
Five pounds of poutine
Northwest Manchester is a residential area, but it’s also minutes away from stores and restaurants. Groceries and everyday essentials are available at the nearby Walmart Supercenter, and fishing gear is for sale next door at Bass Pro Shops. Locals eat breakfast at Canadian restaurant Chez Vachon, famous for its poutine challenge where diners have an hour to eat 5 pounds of cheese curd-topped fries smothered with gravy. Pizza and meatball subs are served inside leather booths at Hot Stone Pizzeria. Catholic Medical Center is the main Manchester hospital on the West Side. It’s about 10 minutes away from the Northwest.
