A borough over 200 years in the making

Those living in the small town of Manchester can imagine what it was like to live in Pennsylvania 150 years ago. Many streetscapes and homes echo those of years past, though there are two significant changes: development and traffic. This area of York County is rich in early American history. Manchester Borough sits on land that was obtained by John Nickey in 1740. By 1869, the land was divided into lots, owned by different people, and was officially incorporated as a town.

Traditional, but varied home styles

A dense, suburban vibe is on offer in this community. Ranch-style homes built with rich, red brick sit in front of manicured lawns. Several traditional home styles also comprise the area, including Cape Cod, ranch-style, foursquare, split-level, colonial-revival and duplex homes. Many homes were built in the mid-20th century, in the 50s and 60s, but were renovated recently with modern fixtures. There are also plenty of newly constructed homes in the area as well. What is common to each home in the community, however, are spacious front lawns and walkable residential streets. Laid-back games of catch and neighborhood strolls are commonplace in this suburban oasis. Home prices range from $40,000 to $440,000.

Playgrounds, disc golf and athletic fields in local parks

Manchester’s community park sits on Liverpool Street. It offers playground equipment, tennis and basketball courts and the Manchester Athletic Association Baseball Field. Tables and benches are scattered throughout the park, making it a popular place to meet for lunch or sit and read. Dauberton Park sits at the southwest edge of the neighborhood. The park features a walking path, a pavilion for gatherings, a play area for kids and a beginner-friendly disc golf course. Royal Manchester Golf Links is just north of Manchester, a golf club with 18 holes and courses overlooking the countryside. Adventurous locals can access the Susquehanna River a few minutes east of Manchester, where they can fish, boat or paddle. A few minutes south of the neighborhood is John Rudy County Park, which offers a plethora of amenities. The park’s 150 acres contain pavilions, sports fields, horseshoe pits, volleyball courts, a cross-country trail and even a BMX track. Canine Meadows is the park’s off-leash dog park, with areas separated by dog size. The crowned jewel of the park, however, is the expansive gardens. Flowering annuals, perennials, vegetables and woody plants decorate the area. During a typical growing season, 6,000 pounds of produce are collected and donated to the York County Food Bank and the Catholic Harvest Pantry.

High school students contribute to small-town businesses

Locals can start their day with a hearty breakfast from The Manchester Diner and end it with dessert from Bobcat Creamery. The ice cream shop is unique in that it allows high school students to get involved in their business operations. Students at Northeastern High School make up their Board of Directors and help make decisions for the business as a learning decision. Students are frequently employed by the creamery as well. In addition to ice cream, patrons can order various deli sandwiches. When residents crave pizza, there are two nearby shops: Manchester Pizza and Parma Pizza. Two shopping centers are nearby. At Manchester Plaza, locals can get their shopping done at Giant and pump iron at East Manchester Village Center’s Planet Fitness.
