Home styles consist of ranch-style, bi-level and new traditional, with most having been built between 1979 and 2001. Three- and four-bedroom homes range from $250,000 to $320,000, while houses with five or more bedrooms sell for $340,000 to $460,000. On average, houses sell within 17 days on the market. Candlewood is also home to several apartment complexes, namely Cambridge Square and Westchester Park Apartments, located on the neighborhood's eastern side.

A highly-rated school district

The Manhattan-Ogden Unified School District serves the residents of Candlewood. Students can begin their education at Frank V. Bergman Elementary, which scored an A-minus on Niche. They continue their education at Susan B. Anthony Middle, also rated A-minus, and Manhattan High, rated A. Manhattan High offers dual enrollment with Manhattan Area Technical College, which has specific courses that transfer to Kansas State University. Located about 2.5 miles southeast of the neighborhood, Kansas State offers more than 250 undergraduate programs and more than 165 graduate degrees and certificates.

CiCo Park and the Hudson Nature Trail

Bordering the neighborhood to the south is 97-acre CiCo Park, with a skate park, sledding hill and dog park. CiCo is also home to Lud Fiser Youth Sports Complex, Manhattan High’s Bishop Stadium and the meeting space at Pottorf Hall. Hosted in the park every July, the Riley County Fair includes farm animal exhibits, the WEEE Entertainment Carnival and the Kaw Valley PRCA Rodeo. The 2-mile Hudson Nature Trail runs north to south, bordering the neighborhood to the west. “People are active here,” says Plattner.

Dining in Candlewood and shopping downtown

Paramour Coffee offers the option of indoor seating or drive-through service. Early Edition on Kimball Avenue serves homestyle American breakfast and brunch. For groceries, there's a Dillons in West Loop Shopping Center about 2 miles south of the neighborhood.

Downtown commutes

Kansas Route 113 borders the neighborhood to the east, providing access to downtown Manhattan about 5 miles southeast of Candlewood. “The subdivision is just off of the major street running all the way West to East through Manhattan,” says Barb Meitler, a Realtor with Platinum Realty. “It is also a close commute to Ft. Riley for our military soldiers and employees of Ft. Riley.” Fort Riley is about 16 miles southwest of the neighborhood. The ATA Bus stops at several points along Candlewood Drive, with routes to Aggieville and the Kansas State campus. The Manhattan Regional Airport is 7 miles southwest of Candlewood.

Tornado Alley

Candlewood experiences occasional severe weather, as Manhattan is located in Tornado Alley. Manhattan’s most recent storms include an EF-1 tornado in June 2022 and an EF-4 tornado in June 2008.
