Spanish cuisine and culture between Central Park and the Bronx
East Harlem has always reflected the backgrounds of its residents. “It’s a really diverse neighborhood, and you have access to those different cultures in East Harlem,” says Tay Tiwoni, who has been selling homes there for 10 years. In the early 20th century, the area was nicknamed Italian Harlem. By the 1950s, a pocket within the neighborhood became known as Spanish Harlem, and as that community expanded, East Harlem became Spanish Harlem — a.k.a. El Barrio. Today, authentic Puerto Rican and Cuban restaurants, some with live music, offer a feeling of home away from home. Large affordable housing complexes and lower average housing costs compared to Carnegie Hill just to the south continue to attract new neighbors. Plus, upcoming residential, office and retail developments around the 125th Street subway and Metro-North station are making room for even more people to enjoy everything East Harlem has to offer.

Crispy Cuban sandwiches and a Costco with easy parking
Spanish Harlem has one of New York City’s highest concentrations of Puerto Rican and Cuban restaurants. At La Fonda, slow-roasted pernil pork and five different types of mofongo have been delighting diners for almost 30 years. Pressed sandwiches from Amor Cubano make a filling lunch, and any one of their 11 mojito flavors is fitting for the live bachata music performances at night. Patsy’s Pizzeria, opened in 1933, and Rao’s, opened in 1896, maintain connections to East Harlem’s Italian-American history. Newcomers like Teranga, serving West African rice bowls, and Bangklyn’s Thai fusion menu, show how the neighborhood continues to change. Regional and local grocery chains have stores every few blocks throughout East Harlem, and the Costco and ALDI in the East River Plaza are handy for large hauls. The graffiti hall of fame wall on 106th Street, as well as Fifth Avenue institutions like El Museo Del Barrio and the Museum of the City of New York, are draws for locals and tourists alike.

Puerto Rico pride near the NYC Marathon route
Every summer, the 116th Street Festival is a family-friendly dance party, with music bumping and Puerto Rican flags waving. In early November, New York City marathoners go up First Avenue and down Fifth, giving neighbors an opportunity to hang out on the sidelines. And in early January, the Three Kings Day parade brings religious tradition and live camels to Park Avenue from 106th to 115th streets.
Condos from $500,000 and Old New York brownstones
Like Central Harlem, East Harlem has a considerable supply of townhouses that add old-New York charm to residential side streets. Prices for these primarily prewar townhouses range from $1.6 to $6 million. Co-op buildings, which are also often prewar or mid-20th-century, have units that start at $200,000 at the north end of the neighborhood, and increase to $900,000 heading south. However, spacious Fifth Avenue co-op units with Central Park views can cost as much as $3.2 million. Condominiums follow a similar pattern, with units in modest buildings starting at $500,000, and units in newer buildings, which have luxury amenities or Central Park views, reaching $3.3 million.

Soccer, swimming, skateboarding and a Central Park lake
Central Park runs along the southwest corner of East Harlem, giving residents 843 acres of green space at their disposal. Soon, the Harlem Meer renovations will add an ice-skating rink, too. Marcus Garvey Park, near the center of the neighborhood, has an outdoor amphitheater. Along the East River, Thomas Jefferson Park has a well-trod soccer pitch and skate park. Both also have swimming pools that open in the summer. Up north, Harlem River Park has additional athletic fields, and nearby playgrounds are convenient for parents with young kids.

Local 6 service and upcoming Q train expansion
“For people that work in Midtown or Downtown, East Harlem is attractive because they have access to so many train stations,” Tiwoni says. The 6 train makes stops through the center of the neighborhood along Lexington Avenue, and the 125th Street station adds connections to 4 and 5 trains, Metro-North and, in the future, the Q. “With the FDR highway right there, you can get to LaGuardia airport really quickly, too,” Tiwoni says.

More than 30 public schools in the area
Kids have plenty of public and private education options throughout East Harlem. At 128th and 123rd streets, the Democracy Prep Harlem Charter School and the Harlem Prep Charter School both teach kindergarten through 12th grade and have A-minus grades from Niche. At 103rd Street, P.S. 171 Patrick Henry teaches preschool through eighth grade, and at 105th Street is Park East High School — both with A grades from Niche.

I love the fact that East Harlem is in the burrough of Manhattan and yet it feels true to itself, meaning, that you walk on the streets and it is still "El Barrio" boasting with live and hispanic/latino culutre from the street food and bodegas.

The safety itself is not bad it the crimes and the amounts of times the police is seen. Some crimes just downfall because the police is on the look out but if it wasn't the crimes would not have changed.

East Harlem is very diverse and full of culture. There are a variety of restaurants, shops, museums and parks. The cost of living is quite high but there are job opportunities available. You simply have to be creative. I love that I live near Central Park so I can experience nature within the city and the people are friendly and helpful.
