Highland Park
Neighborhood in Mankato, Minnesota
Blue Earth County 56001
Homes, condos and townhouses south of Glenwood Avenue
Rental units in park-like settings, such as those in Balcerzak Place Townhomes, border MSU and primarily appeal to students looking to live off-campus. However, most of Highland Park consists of long-standing single-family homes, so the neighborhood maintains an established feel. Most homes date back anywhere from the 1910s to the 1970s, so the landscaping appears vibrant and mature. A few condos along Cedar Street cost between $115,000 and $140,000, but most homes are single-family with cottage or ranch-style architecture. Three-bedroom homes range from $150,000 to $220,000, while four-bedroom homes reach up to $330,000.Walking the dog at Highland Park or swinging racquets at Picklebarn
The neighborhood’s namesake park welcomes leashed dogs and invites neighbors to enjoy a volleyball game on a sandy court. Because the park includes picnic tables and grills, it’s not uncommon to see family gatherings on the weekends. Heritage Estates Park is another park in the community, but there are several more within a mile radius. “We have a lot of parks in the town, and there are a lot of rec opportunities because of the college. There’s a new ice pond that’s an arena for hockey, and there’s a pickleball place called the Picklebarn. Plus, there are artist opportunities in different areas, like the Makerspace, where a lot of people do crafts and get together,” says Donna Killion of Edina Realty, a local Realtor and lifelong resident of Mankato. With the university next door, Mankato Makerspace 3 miles away and Picklebarn 5 miles away, Highland Park remains a quick drive from the city’s recreational opportunities.Top-rated public school district in Blue Earth County
Mankato Area Public Schools serve Highland Park. Students can start their education at Rosa Parks Elementary, a school receiving a B grade from Niche, before heading to Prairie Winds Middle, a B-plus-graded school. From here, students can attend Mankato East High, a B-plus-graded school offering extracurricular activities like VEX Robotics and Planetarium Production Club. For a postsecondary option, Minnesota State University is no more than a half-mile away from most homes in the neighborhood. The university has been part of Mankato since 1868 and offers the only four-year aviation program in the state.Close to Blue Earth County Historical Society and MSU Theatre
A half-mile walk north leads to the Blue Earth County Historical Society, which hosts events such as history exhibits, book readings and Vaudeville-style performances. The Minnesota State University Theatre is also one of the nearest campus buildings bordering Highland Park, inviting locals to see student drama and dance performances. Other events happen closer to the riverfront, and while these are a couple of miles away, it doesn’t take long to get there. “Everywhere in Mankato is 10 minutes or less. You can even get from one side to the other in 10 minutes,” says Shannon Beal of JBeal Real Estate, a Realtor with several sales throughout Mankato. RibFest at Vetter Stone Amphitheater is one of the most-loved events in the city, but there are also marathons, concerts and art displays to explore within a 3-mile radius.Sidewalks, bike lanes and main thoroughfares throughout Mankato
Sidewalks lead directly to the MSU campus, and bike lanes line streets such as Glenwood Avenue and Monks Avenue — two thoroughfares bordering the neighborhood. The Mayo Clinic is 2 miles away, and employers like the Taylor Corporation in North Mankato are 4 miles away. The bus stops at Cherry Ridge Apartments, in the northern part of the neighborhood, linking Highland Park to Old Town in 2 miles. Whether a student or not, living in Highland Park means gaining access to the restaurant chains on campus, including Chipotle and Caribou Coffee. Old Town Mankato's restaurants are also within a mile, easily reached by driving down Warren Street. Pagliai’s Pizza, a staple since 1969, and Ummie’s, a cozy joint serving American favorites, are two of the closest options. For grocery shopping, the nearest store is Hy-Vee, which can be reached by taking Highland Avenue for about a mile to Riverfront Drive.
