Life near the nature preserve at Rasmussen Woods
Mankato’s steady growth is evident in areas such as Rasmussen Park, one of the communities bordering the Minnesota State University Mankato campus. While Stoltzman Road, named after U.S. Marine Cpl. George Stoltzman, the first Blue Earth County man killed in the Vietnam War, is now a main route in Rasmussen Park. The thoroughfare didn’t exist in its present state until the 1980s. “At one point, Stoltzman Road wasn’t there,” says Sara Stilson of True Real Estate, an agent with several sales in the area and a lifelong resident of Mankato. “When I grew up, it was a gravel road instead of a big throughway to the college.” The nature preserve bordering the road to the west is also one of the city’s later projects. The city established Rasmussen Woods in 1977, over a century after Mankato’s founding. The neighborhood surrounding the forested area now has apartments, single-family homes and nursing homes — most of which popped up anywhere from the late 1960s to the present day. Considering the city’s oldest home, from 1858, is only a few miles away, Rasmussen Park offers newer housing stock and parks than many of the neighboring communities to the east.
Marshes and woodlands near the Red Jacket Trail
The miles of trails throughout Rasmussen Woods invite residents to enjoy a brisk walk along shaded paths, and it’s common to see dogs joining in. Unlike a typical park, Rasmussen Woods includes more than a walkable path across its 150-acre grounds. “Rasmussen Woods is so cool. It’s got prairies and wetlands, deer and wildlife. In the wetlands, part of the trail is floating. You walk on it, and it moves with you,” Stilson says. The floating trail includes a boarded walkway that rises and falls with the marsh beneath it. The trails at the park also link up to the Red Jacket Trail for a more extensive walking or biking path. For a smaller park with a basketball court and playground, Southview is a mile south of Rasmussen Woods.
