Controversy brews over redevelopment plans
Adjacent to Loyola Catholic School on Good Counsel Hill, the former home of the School Sisters of Notre Dame remains in limbo. Long the provincial base for the organization of Catholic teaching nuns, the 109-year-old campus had been the proposed site for affordable housing and a drug- and alcohol-treatment center. That proposal fell through in 2024 following resident and school-parent opposition to the treatment-center component. The School Sisters of Notre Dame, which moved its operations to downtown Mankato in 2021, maintains the property in the interim. The 30-acre site had for decades been the site of variety of public events, such as arts-and-crafts displays and winter festivals.
