Less than 40 miles south of Shreveport, the small, quiet town of Mansfield in DeSoto Parish, Louisiana, is steeped in history as the site of the last major Confederate victory during the Civil War and the first female college west of the Mississippi. “Mansfield has been around for a long time and has a lot of history, but the community today is definitely one that is more up-and-coming, with revitalization efforts,” says Tracy Thomas, a former Mansfield resident and a Realtor with Century 21 United. “Most people living in Mansfield were born and raised there or moved there because of family, though a lot of residents also live there because they are employed at International Paper, a local paper mill.” While Mansfield provides slower-paced living, “Mansfield is about an hour from Natchitoches, which is one of the oldest cities in Louisiana, so it has a lot of old Antebellum houses and other architecture that people like to drive around and look at,” Thomas says. “It’s now a college town, so there’s a lot of variety in things to do, even if you aren’t into history.” The historic city was also the filming location for the iconic movie, “Steel Magnolias,” which contributes to the consistent draw from residents in Mansfield and surrounding areas. Not to be outdone, Mansfield itself was also the filming location for the movie, “The Great Debaters,” starring Denzel Washington, as well as the television series, “Salem.”

Midcentury ranch-style and manufactured homes
“There aren’t really any overly expensive homes in Mansfield, which is why a lot of people like to buy there,” Thomas says. “It’s much more affordable than surrounding areas, with most homes being anywhere from $50,000 to $300,000.” Most residences here are midcentury ranch-style or manufactured homes with wooded lots and mature trees, some of which sit on several acres — though buyers can also find historic homes from the mid-to-late 1800s with traditional Colonial-style architecture.
