The rural creekside village of Mardela Springs
The quaint village of Mardela Springs has considerable history as a mill and rail town, though today, it’s known for its tight-knit community and spacious rural homes. The Eastern Shore town rests on Barren Creek, a tributary branching off the Nanticoke River, a recreational hub for locals. “The town has a boat ramp, a lot of people fish or go waterfowl hunting,” says Colby Phippin, a local of the neighboring town of Hebron and a Realtor with Whitehead Real Estate Executives. “People use jet skis, I know I do, I love using the creek right around here.” Many locals stay for the area’s farming jobs, commute to Salisbury for university jobs, or work for the poultry giant Perdue, whose national headquarters is stationed there.

DOA Outfitters is a business based in Mardela Springs, offering lodging, equipment and semi-guided tours for duck and goose hunting around the marshlands around the creek. Anglers can cast lines on the Nanticoke River a couple of miles west of home to catch catfish, sea trout and rockfish, or toss nets to catch Maryland blue crabs.

Local history of the Mardela Mineral Springs
Aside from the town being a prosperous center for manufacturers and gristmills in the 19th century, the area was also well known for its mineral spring. “People used to come from all around for Mardela Mineral Springs,” says Phippin. “There was a hotel where people would come for the water, which they believed had healing qualities; there’s a spring house which is still here.”
The preserved Double Mills grist mill stands as a reminder of Mardela Springs’ agricultural past.
The waters from the Barren Creek Mineral Spring were thought to have curative properties and attracted visitors in the 19th century to Mardela Springs.
