Marion's 36,800 residents enjoy a rural landscape, a museum dedicated to the simple pleasure of popcorn and a downtown area filled with local restaurants. In addition to its charm, affordability is also a major draw. "You get a lot of bang for your buck here, so the price is the main draw,” says Realtor Jon Ullman, who sells homes with JW Cutler & Associates Realty.
Although it may feel remote (the city is about 45 miles from Columbus, Ohio), Marion is home to several manufacturers, including the Whirlpool Corporation, Silver Line Windows and Wyandot Snacks. “There was once a steel plant, but when they closed down, a lot of miscellaneous manufacturers came in and filled the space,” Ullman says. One of the country’s largest intermodal freight transport facilities is based in Marion and provides shipping services for the city’s largest companies. “The rail transport is directly related to the old steel industry,” Ullman says. “If the United States ever gets back into manufacturing, Marion will be ready to go.”
The city also has several historic sites associated with its most resident — 29th President Warren G. Harding, who spent his youth there. Marion is where he met his wife, practiced law, tried his hand at insurance sales and purchased a nearly defunct local paper called The Marion Star, which still operates. Downtown Marion is on Center Street, with its connected brick buildings from the early 20th century. Many of the storefronts are vacant, but there is a local brewery, a hibachi spot, an Italian kitchen and a bar that serves American fare like burgers and wings. There is also a coffee shop, a bookstore and a candy store. North Main Street is lined with fast food options. On the city’s east side, Marion-Mount Gilead Road is lined with sit-down franchises and big-box retailers.

Plays at Marion Palace Theatre and county fairs
Marion Palace Theatre has been the entertainment hotspot of Marion since 1928, and currently hosts plays and touring musicians. The city’s Heritage Hall is based out of the former post office, where the Marion County Historical Society has been headquartered since the organization purchased the property in 1989. The building is also home to the Wyandot Popcorn Museum, which has the country’s largest collection of popcorn roasters and wagons. The Marion County Fairgrounds hosts rodeos, tractor pulls and demolition derbies. The annual county fair has been held there for over 175 years.

Outdoor spaces within and immediately outside the city
The city’s access to public greenspaces is somewhat limited, but a few neighborhood parks have playgrounds. The city’s largest greenspace is Lincoln Park, which has baseball fields, an aquatic center, a skate park and soccer fields. Outside the city, there are family campgrounds and golf clubs.

Traveling to Columbus
OhioHealth Marion General Hospital and Emergency Department is on the city’s south end. The city does not have a public bus system, so residents are dependent on cars.
Columbus, the nearest major city, is 46 miles south via U.S. Route 23 and Ohio State Route 315. “It’s a real easy commute to Columbus,” Ullman says. “A lot of people will commute daily.” When residents need to take a flight, they use John Glenn Columbus International Airport.
According to FBI data, the violent and property crime rates are below the national average.
