There’s a lot to like with Marlborough
Situated on the outskirts of Hartford, Marlborough is great for residents who want easy access to the city while also desiring their own quiet, suburban home in the woods. “As Glastonbury got too congested, people started moving to Marlborough,” says Vincent Diana, an Associate Broker with William Raveis Real Estate who has been selling properties in the area for 30 years. “Plus, it's closer to Hartford than Hebron.” There is still a bit to do in Marlborough’s small downtown, like eating at unique restaurants and shopping for antiques in an old barn. The community also has great schools. Most homes go for a little above $400,000, but there are also lakefront options starting around $700,000.

Homes in the woods and homes by the lake
Many homes have carved a space for themselves in the forests of Marlborough. Subdivisions tend to be small, and homeowners have plenty of land to call their own. Driveways are normally just wide enough for single cars, and many houses use side or detached garages. Cape Cod and Colonial Revival style homes were built during the 1950s through ‘80s, while the neighborhood’s raised ranch-style homes sprung up during late ‘60s and ‘70s. The 21st century has seen more developments pop up, many following the New Traditional designs with Colonial Revival influences. Some homes mimic the farmhouses of Marlborough’s past, sporting gambrel roofs. Most homes include between three and five bedrooms and sit atop spacious lots, mature trees acting as privacy fences. Colonial Revival homes start around $450,000, but Cape Cods and ranch homes can sell for $340,000 or less. Homes by the shore of Lake Terramuggus rarely sell under $700,000.

RHAMing education home
Students can start off at Elmer Thienes-Mary Hall Elementary School. Afterwards, they can attend schools in Hebron like RHAM Middle and RHAM High School. Elmer Thienes-Mary Hall Elementary and RHAM Middle hold respectable B-plus ratings from Niche, while RHAM High has earned a commendable A grade. RHAM’s athletic teams have performed very well in the past, and the girls’ varsity volleyball team has won their division championship 10 times over the past 17 years. Niche considers RHAM to be the best public high school in Tolland County.

Marlborough is car-centric
Marlborough is beyond the reaches of CT Transit, and many residents prefer driving their cars to get around. Connecticut Route 2 conveniently runs alongside downtown Marlborough, and via this highway, locals can be in downtown Hartford in under 20 minutes.
Marlborough lies along Route 2, ensuring residents an easy ride to Hartford or Norwich.
Shopping and dining at historic establishments
Big Y World Class Market is at the crossroads of Marlborough’s little downtown and allows for easy grocery shopping. Residents looking for furniture, home décor or just hankering to go antiquing might visit the Shops at Marlborough Barn, where over a dozen vendors can be found. The structure was originally part of a 19th century dairy farm before housing a high-end furnishings business, and the building’s rustic charms have followed through to today. The Marlborough Tavern has been serving drinks almost continuously since the building was constructed in 1760, and with its rustically decorated interior, residents can feel like they’re back in colonial times. Sadler’s Ordinary similarly carries on its history, ordinary here referring to a resting spot for travelers. The quaint establishment serves seafood, sandwiches and various specialties like meatloaf and stuffed pork loin. Residents can listen to live music each Thursday evening on their patio.

From beaches to sand traps
Blish Memorial Park is open exclusively to Marlborough residents. Though the park is on the smaller side, it offers tennis courts, a beach and access to Lake Terramuggus, which is great for swimming and kayaking. To the south, locals can walk the trails and through the covered bridge of Salmon River State Forest. The park’s many tributaries make for great fishing spots. To the north, residents can tee off at Blackledge and Tallwood country clubs. Blackledge is now open year-round, offering HD golf simulators.

Events straight from the bayou and the farm
It may come as a surprise, but during the summers, Marlborough becomes a mecca of Zydeco music, an eclectic genre with roots in the music of Louisiana Creoles. The multi-day Bayou Boogie Festival takes place at the Chateau le Gari Winery, attracting visitors from across the country. Locals can also attend the Hebron Harvest Fair in neighboring Hebron, a four-day event featuring live music, food vendors, livestock pull competitions and more.
