Free-spirited neighborhood at the northern tip of Martha's Vineyard
Bohemian Vineyard Haven is the closest thing Martha’s Vineyard has to a year-round town. In this vibrant district, ivy grows through white picket fences, houses sit on sloped streets and driveways are made of stone. Main Street runs parallel to the waterfront, and artisan cheese stores, clothing retailers and sandwich shops do business on the ground floor of gray-shingled buildings and houses with nautically colored awnings.
The Vineyard Haven ferry transports people between the island and New Bedford year-round, allowing day laborers like construction workers to shuttle back and forth. Hospitality workers tend to rent in and around Vineyard Haven, and home prices are lower than the up-island towns, although taxes are much higher. “It’s a lot of houses that can be in that affordable price range, at least by island standards,” says Lisa Lucier, owner and broker of Anchor Realty in nearby Oak Bluffs. “They have more year-round neighborhoods.” In the wintertime, snowstorms can bring inches of snow to the island, causing traffic accidents and power outages.

Coffee shops and burger restaurants in Vineyard village
Vineyard Haven has a free-spirited vibe, contrasting it with buttoned-up Edgartown and down-home Oak Bluffs. Blooming bushes with brightly colored flowers grow in front of boutiques and residential colonials. Locally owned Bunch of Grapes bookstore has new releases, Vineyard-inspired literature and a resident cat named Bookmark, who likes to curl up in his bed near the front of the store. Second-hand stores like Act Two sell clothing, furniture and accessories at resale prices.
Mocha Mott’s, a coffee shop with an Oak Bluffs location, has bagel sandwiches, soups and flavored coffees. The blueberry flavoring is purple and tastes like the actual berry rather than an artificial flavor. People sit at the café’s wooden tables, use their mobile hotspots for Wi-Fi and read the Vineyard Gazette, which is $1. Bobby B’s has burgers, pizza and fries on one side and cupcakes and pastries on the other. Customers pick up their food from the counter and eat it at a table on the patio. The Attic has a dimly lit dining room with bohemian décor and serves food like ahi tuna and lobster rolls. “Vineyard Haven probably has more open year-round on Main Street compared to Oak Bluffs,” says Lucier. “It has a drugstore and things like that, that we don’t have on our main streets.”

Huge mansions and housing concerns on Martha's Vineyard
Houses in Vineyard Haven vary in terms of age and style. Gray-shingled 19th-century colonials stand underneath tall, shady trees, behind lush front lawns and flowery bushes, but near the waterfront, new condos are available inside buildings that look like traditional houses. Split-level houses with wraparound front porches can be found behind dirt front pathways and two-story homes with front porches sit on dead-end streets with a mixture of summer and year-round residents. Prices can be as low as $850,000, a steal by island standards, but they can also get as high as $10 million. Vineyard Haven, the colloquial name for the town of Tisbury, has the highest property tax rate of any island town. Taxes are high because they need to support the ferry.
Martha’s Vineyard has an ongoing housing crisis. The prevalence of vacation rentals, where homeowners can make in a week what most renters pay in a month, has made it difficult for people who work on the island to find a place to live. A winter shelter in Oak Bluffs saw 54 guests between Nov. 1 and the end of April, a record. About two-thirds of those guests had seasonal or year-round jobs. Stop & Shop, which has one of its two island stores in Vineyard Haven, provides housing for staff. “They do that to keep their employees, so they know they’re going to have housing,” Lucier says. “It’s hard to be couch surfing and also working. It’s much easier to provide housing for them, to get them to stay.” Construction workers tend to come in for jobs via the ferry, but other than that, most of the workforce lives on the island, she says.
Lately, many of the homes hitting the market are from people who lived on the island for ten or more years, says Lucier. Sometimes residents put their homes up for sale to see what’s out there, but it’s not a big deal if there are no takers. But other times Lucier says she brings a box of tissues to meetings. “They’re crying. They don’t want to sell the house because they love it here. Some of us are worried that’s a trend we don’t really like to see because that means that people who have lived here for a long time can’t afford to live here anymore,” she says. “We don’t want the island to outprice itself.”
