Pocketed in Fayette County's southwestern side, Nicholson is a mountainous, rural community bordering the Monongahela River and 9 miles from the Pennsylvania-West Virginia border. Characterized by its laid-back atmosphere and peaceful community connection, Nicholson offers a quiet, simple way of life that many residents cherish.
Along Nicholson's winding roads through the vast, rolling hills of Appalachia, you'll find a mixture of older farmhouses, cottages and ranch-style homes scattered around large, grassy fields. Smaller homes can price as little as $80,000 while larger properties with four bedrooms can range between $100,000 and $200,000. It's also common for residents to purchase unoccupied lots for the purpose of building custom homes. Partially due to their distance from metropolitan areas, Nicholson homes can spend up to two months on the market before being sold.
Students in Nicholson are served by the Albert Gallatin Area School District. Children can attend Friendship Hill Elementary School, which earns an overall grade of B-plus from Niche, or the neighboring Albert Gallatin South Middle School, which Niche gives an overall grade of C-minus. Teens can go to Albert Gallatin High School. With an overall Niche grade of C, the high school offers many extracurricular clubs and organizations, including Future Business Leaders of America and JROTC.
For general shopping, Nicholson locals often drive to Shop 'n Save in Fairchance to pick up fresh meats and produce for a home-cooked meal. You can also travel 3 miles north to Masontown and stop by the local Dollar General for other everyday essentials.
While you're in Masontown, visit Betty Mae's Bakery on South Main Street and grab one of its signature pastries or espressos. Fat Angelo's on Westwood Avenue is another area staple, highlighted by its Mountaineer pizza and breaded mushrooms. If you're looking for a quick bite closer to Nicholson, the roadside Hobo Jack's off Broadway is one of the area's more frequented eateries, offering hot dogs and hamburgers to smoked brisket and ribs.
A 5-mile drive east of Nicholson in Smithfield, residents can visit Seghi's Five Lakes for a day of fishing. Cast out a line and reel the facility's trout and bass. Wana B Park is another area hot spot. A 9-mile drive to the northwest, you can practice your curveball at the baseball fields or take a dip at the neighboring Eastern Pool.
Nicholson residents can also visit Cheat Lake Park, stationed just south of the Pennsylvania-West Virginia border. With a swimming beach and a 4.5-mile hiking and biking trail along the water, the park is an excellent place to enjoy nature and even spot local wildlife throughout the year.
Being over 50 miles from the Pittsburgh metropolitan area, Nicholson locals are largely car-dependent. However, Nicholson's countryside setting and quiet, easygoing lifestyle are what residents appreciate most about their community.
