Nicholson Township offers easy living near the Monongahela River

Pocketed in Fayette County's southwestern side, Nicholson Township is a mountainous, rural community bordering the Monongahela River and 9 miles from the Pennsylvania-West Virginia border. Characterized by its laid-back atmosphere and peaceful community connection, the township offers a quiet, simple way of life that many residents cherish. Being over 50 miles from the Pittsburgh metropolitan area, Nicholson locals are largely car-dependent. However, the township's country setting and quiet, easygoing lifestyle are what residents appreciate most about their community.

Farmhouses and ranch-styles line winding Appalachian roads

Along Nicholson's winding roads through the vast, rolling hills of Appalachia is a mixture of older farmhouses, cottages and ranch-style homes. Smaller houses can price as little as $80,000 while larger properties with four bedrooms can range between $100,000 and $200,000. Undeveloped lots are also available for custom builds. Partially due to their distance from metropolitan areas, Nicholson homes can spend up to two months on the market before being sold.

Various extracurriculars at Albert Gallatin Area schools

Students in Nicholson are served by the Albert Gallatin Area School District. Friendship Hill Elementary School earns an overall C-plus from Niche, while Albert Gallatin South Middle School gets a C. Teens can go to Albert Gallatin High School. With an overall Niche grade of C-plus, the high school offers many extracurricular clubs and organizations, including Future Business Leaders of America and JROTC.

Playgrounds, pools and swimming beaches surround the township

Just east in Smithfield, residents can visit Seghi's Five Lakes for a day of trout and bass fishing. Wana B Park in nearby Carmichaels is another hotspot with a pool, splash pad, picnic pavilions and tennis courts. Nicholson residents can also visit Cheat Lake Park, stationed across the West Virginia border. With a swimming beach and a 4.5-mile hiking and biking trail along the water, the park is a year-round venue for wildlife spotting.

Groceries and essentials found in nearby Fairchance and Masontown

The roadside Hobo Jack's off Broadway is one of the area's more frequented eateries, offering hot dogs, hamburgers and smoked brisket and ribs. For groceries, Nicholson locals often drive to Shop 'n Save in Fairchance. About 3 miles away, Dollar General in Masontown also offers some necessities. Masontown's Betty Mae's Bakery offers signature pastries and espresso drinks. Fat Angelo's on Westwood Avenue is another area staple, offering Mountaineer pizza and breaded mushrooms.
