The Gateway to the Gold Fields

Marysville is a true testament to northern California’s role in the Gold Rush. In fact, its small population of just under 13,000 residents is roughly equal to its population during the Gold Rush. Today, this Yuba County city’s tagline is “Gateway to the Gold Fields” and it is affectionately known as California’s Oldest Little City. Remains of its history are everywhere, from the Victorian-esque architecture to its commercial buildings and houses of worship. What also defines the city is its quality of life. "We're different from more fast-paced metropolitan areas like Sacramento or San Francisco because we offer a quieter, more community-focused lifestyle with lower living costs," says Dan Flores, the city's Community and Economic Development Director. "Marysville is known for its proximity to the Sierra Nevada mountains and the Feather and Yuba Rivers, so there's easy access to outdoor activities like hiking and fishing."

As for Marysville's plans for the future, the city wants to progress in a number of ways. "We're working on an updated General Plan for future development, with a particular emphasis on downtown revitalization, improving infrastructure and expanding housing opportunities," Flores says. "Economic development efforts are geared toward attracting new businesses and supporting local entrepreneurs but there's also a strong focus on improving public spaces, maintaining historic sites and investing in public safety."
