A gold rush town grows up

Central Marysville is in the heart of the city of Marysville, a small town in Yuba County in the Gold Country region of Northern California. Central Marysville puts residents in the urban center of this small town. Locals settle into older homes preserved since their construction in the early 20th century. They’ll live close to restaurants and schools that have been popular for years. Homes and businesses have been around long enough to be city landmarks. This neighborhood is the busiest of a fairly quiet city, as residents share Central Marysville with most of the city's restaurants and Highways 20 and 70.

Older homes in Central Marysville

The blocks of Central Marysville give the neighborhood a strong city feel. While there are mature trees to shade the modest yards, power lines and front-yard fences blend suburban aesthetics with urban influence. Homes sit close together on highly-traveled roads. “People like buying in Central Marysville because they can get a good price on the older homes,” says Janice O’Brien, a Realtor with RE/MAX Gold who has previously sold in the area. Most homes were built pre-1950 in early 20th-century styles, such as bungalows and Tudor revivals. Homes generally sell between $230,000 and $400,000. “The homes are older in general, but not historic, so people can update,” says Desiree Hastey, owner and broker at Plumas Lake Properties, who has been selling homes in the area for over 10 years. “The area is levy-locked, so further development is impossible.” The city is more than a century old, so it is fully built out. In Central Marysville, there is no room or land for further housing developments.

Popular local restaurants in Marysville

“There is some good food in Marysville,” Hastey says. “It’s mostly mom-and-pop places, but there are a few chains.” Most restaurants are situated along Highways 20 and 70, which run through the neighborhood. Locals have their pick of cuisines, from classic American at Frosty’s Grill N’ Chill or longstanding landmark Silver Dollar Saloon. Residents dine out at authentic Thao Kitchen Thai Cuisine or Casa Carlos Restaurant and Cantina. The neighborhood Save Mart provides locals with essentials.

Bok Kai Temple and events

One of America’s oldest Chinese temples operates in Central Marysville. Patrons come to pray and attend services at Bok Kai Temple. The temple is also a school and museum of Chinese artifacts and culture. The temple also hosts an annual parade each spring, an institution in Marysville for decades. The earliest version of the celebration was hosted by Chinese immigrants in the 1850s to honor Bok Kai, the Chinese water god, and protect the city from flooding.

Kids attend one of the oldest high schools in California

Kids can start school at Mary Covillaud Elementary School, graded C-plus by Niche. From there, they can go on to Anna McKenney Intermediate School, graded C. Like generations of Marysville kids before them, they finish school at Marysville High School, graded B-plus. It’s one of the oldest public schools in California.

Parks in Central Marysville

Despite being in the city’s center, there are a few different parks for residents to visit. Ellis Lake and its surrounding park are a centerpiece of the neighborhood. The lake isn’t for swimming or boating but is a popular place to walk around and enjoy the view. The trails of multi-acre Beckwourth Riverfront Park are a popular place to hike near Feather River. For game courts and playgrounds, residents head to Veteran’s Park or Market Square Park.

State highway access in neighborhood

In Central Marysville, with its network of sidewalks, it's easy for residents to walk down their front steps and head to local restaurants or shops. Walk Score gives Marysville an 85 out of 100. The streets are organized in a tight, post-war grid system, and the growth here has outpaced the infrastructure. “There are only two ways in and two ways out, so it gets super congested,” Hastey says. “There are a lot of commuters, but the real problem is the infrastructure. It gets to be the worst during school when people have to pick up their kids.” State Routes 20 and 70 intersect in the neighborhood, providing a path two miles west to Yuba City or 40 miles south to Sacramento.
