Locals say Ooltewah’s name stems from a Cherokee word meaning “owls roost." But for the last decade, it’s been flocks of people from across the country migrating to the community. Sei-Ondra Williams, a Realtor with Keller Willams Realty, says Ooltewah’s growth has been spurred by its proximity to downtown Chattanooga and major area employers. The Enterprise South Industrial Park, which hosts Volkswagen and Amazon operations, is located less than 5 miles away. “The growth in the last 10 years has been 100 percent,” Williams says. “It went from being farmland to subdivision after subdivision being created. There have been several hundred homes built in the past year.”

Driving around Ooltewah’s rolling hills, you’ll find a wealth of new construction. Older homes in the area typically only date back to the 1990s. The average list price is in the low $500,000s. However, costs can range anywhere from $320,000 for a recently built 1,400-square-foot home with one-third of an acre all the way up to $4 million for a 15-bedroom mansion with 32 acres. “It’s a combination of luxury and everyday living,” Williams says. “There are some very nice subdivisions over there.”

Houses usually sell within one to two weeks. “It all depends on the condition of the home and if it’s priced right,” Williams says. “Some things sell with 24 hours. I just put something on the market Friday evening, and it sold on Monday.”

Public school students in Ooltewah may attend schools such as Ooltewah Elementary School, Hunter Middle School and Ooltewah High School. The schools earn overall grades of B+, A-, and B- respectively, according to Niche.

Ooltewah residents have easy access to nationally known stores such as the Publix at Snow Hill Village and there are plenty of independent shops to choose from as well. You can spend the day dress shopping at Barn Door Boutique, treat yourself to a massage at Poplar Creek Spa, or take a yoga class at Yoga East. “It has a small-town feel, but you have all kinds of entertainment and shopping there now,” Williams says.

For a taste of something local, try the Countryside Café for Southern comfort foods such as fried catfish, sweet tea and buttermilk pie. One regular says the mac & cheese is even better than his mom’s.

Less than 5 miles away in Collegedale, there’s the 10-acre Little Debbie Park, which features a playground with a zipline, rock-climbing structure, and snack-shaped sculptures, such as the 6-foot-tall Christmas Tree Cake. And White Oak Mountain Trails is a popular spot for hikers and mountain bikers alike. Those who visit will discover nearly 25 miles of trails, with varying degrees of difficulty, that wind through the woods and alongside serene creeks.

Twenty minutes away, a wider scale of entertainment options await in downtown Chattanooga. At the Tennessee Aquarium, you can pet stingrays or walk through the indoor butterfly garden that’s home to more than 1,000 butterflies. For its small-town vibe, proximity to job opportunities and downtown, Ooltewah is a popular spot to nest.
