McComb is a rural farming village with a know-your-neighbor lifestyle
McComb is a small village known for agriculture and manufacturing. The community sustains itself through its busy factories and ripe farmland, where many residents make their living. While McComb lacks commercial options, locals enjoy the tranquility of semi-rural living, as leafy trees shade suburban-style lawns and wide roads. Neighbors stay connected, whether through annual events or neighborhood chats. "You might not know everybody, but I know all my neighbors. Several are actually former students," says Deborah Ewing, a longtime local and former teacher at McComb Local School District. "I moved away for a while, then moved back, and it felt like coming home even though I didn't grow up here." The community has a CAP Index Crime Score of 1 out of 10, significantly lower than the national score of 4.
Historic homes sell quickly and use natural gas
Many homes have been around since the 1900s, with a few dating back to the 1870s. Common architectural styles include ranches, farmhouses and two-story Victorian homes with big bay windows and steeply pitched gables. While most homes have been modernized, all are still heated using natural gas since the village has a natural gas system — a unique amenity in the area. Prices range between about $135,000 and $280,000, although investment properties sell below $100,000. "Usually, when houses go up for sale, they don't last very long," Ewing says. "My former neighbor's house sold the first day on the market."
The village's only park is a hub for baseball, fishing and disc golf
Village of McComb Community Park is the area's only park. It has batting cages, baseball fields and two reservoirs that allow public fishing and boating. "A lot of people go to the smaller reservoir to fish because you can still watch ball games from there," Ewing says. The McComb Park Trail loops around both reservoirs. During summer, people ride down the water slide at the park's outdoor swimming pool. The park's newest addition is its 36-hole disc golf course. "It's supposed to be one of the best in the state," Ewing says. "Makes sense since I see people there all the time."
Highway 224 connects to the closest city, but employers are local
Trains occasionally rumble through the center of the community on the Norfolk Southern Railroad but rarely make stops. Residents are car-dependent, relying on State Routes 613 and 235. The community borders Highway 224, which leads straight into Findlay, the closest larger city. While many people commute for work, manufacturers like Hearthside Food Solutions employ over 1,000 people in McComb. "Farming is also a big part of the community," Ewing says. "Some people have thousands of acres that they farm." A full-time ambulance service transfers residents to Blanchard Valley Hospital, 13 miles away. Findlay's municipal airport is roughly 11 miles away.
McComb has its own school district, and colleges are in Findlay
Students attend McComb Elementary School, which has a B rating from Niche. The community has a combined middle and high school, which also has a B rating. To graduate with honors, McComb High School students must complete at least 50 hours of community service. Nearby higher education options include Owens Community College and the University of Findlay, both of which are 10 miles away.
Local nonprofit hosts annual events, like the summer Cookie Festival
The nonprofit McComb Community Partnership plans local events. Its crown jewel is the summer Cookie Festival, which features a parade, car show, live music and plenty of freshly baked cookies. Kids bounce on inflatables while groups participate in fishing derbies and axe-throwing competitions. The Partnership also hosts Hometown Christmas, which started in 2023. Downtown is decked out with lights, including a tree lighting on Main Street. "Last year, they had a window decorating contest with the different stores downtown," Ewing says. There are cookie decorating activities, photo opportunities and a Christmas market featuring local vendors.
Stores and restaurants are limited, but more options are a quick drive away
McComb has very few commercial options. Bread & Butter Antiques and McComb Emporium are popular for vintage goods, while Dollar General offers everyday items. Panthers Pizzeria is the community's only restaurant. Locals drive roughly 9 miles into Findlay to reach other restaurant options and grocery stores like Great Scot or Walmart.
GreatSchools:
The GreatSchools Rating helps parents compare schools within a state based on a variety of school quality indicators and provides a helpful picture of how effectively each school serves all of its students. Ratings are on a scale of 1 (below average) to 10 (above average) and can include test scores, college readiness, academic progress, advanced courses, equity, discipline and attendance data. We also advise parents to visit schools, consider other information on school performance and programs, and consider family needs as part of the school selection process.
