Meadowbrook, about 10 miles south of downtown Richmond in Chesterfield County, is a place that is spread out and slowed down. The area mainly consists of subdivisions and cul-de-sacs, with wide streets shaded by a mature tree canopy. Outside the residential enclaves, hanging powerlines cast shadows onto country roads. Folks driving through Meadowbrook will also come across churches, farmhouses on a few acres and the occasional small shopping center. Two-lane roads feed into highways, which lead to medical care, athletic complexes and other amenities within a 15-minute radius. “Life spreads out here, and things feel remote. Even though it might take a little while to get to things, it’s a nice drive through the country,” says Casey Greene, a Chesterfield County native. It’s that sense of living in the country paired with the area’s proximity to the vibrant downtown sector of Richmond that attracts residents. People choose Meadowbrook because they want a slower pace of life, but they also want to know that they’re not too far from a major city center.

Indoor and outdoor recreation ranges from public parks to private clubs
Meadowbrook residents have access to a plethora of parks and recreation options within Chesterfield County. Members of Meadowbrook Country Club can enjoy the sunset over the 18-hole golf course, eat at the clubhouse and exercise in the fitness center. Beulah Recreation Center has an indoor basketball court, public meeting spaces and a new cricket field – the first regulation-sized pitch in the region, a reflection of the growing number of adult leagues in the area. Locals can also exercise at nearby SwimRVA, a large indoor swimming complex. Iron Bridge Park includes outdoor athletic fields, courts and parking for Little League games.
Meadowbrook is across the road from Pocahontas State Park, which spans nearly 8,000 acres. Here, kids go to the swimming pool in the summers, families camp on the weekends, bikers and hikers traverse wooded trails and teenagers fish and kayak until the park closes at dusk. “In high school, I was a lifeguard at Pocahontas State Park, and people came out from all over Chesterfield to swim,” says Green.

Meadowbrook’s country roads and main thoroughfares
Meadowbrook is car-dependent. Locals have easy access to Virginia State Routes 288 and 150, which lead throughout Richmond and Chesterfield County. “The great thing about this area is all the backroads,” Green says. However, when residents here do want to get to the city, their primary option is to take major thoroughfares. The 10-mile drive to downtown Richmond equates to 15 minutes without traffic up Interstate 95, and Chippenham Hospital is a 7-mile drive up Chippenham Parkway. The Chesterfield County Airport is in the southern part of Meadowbrook, but for commercial flights, Richmond International Airport is 12 miles away.

Shopping and dining in Meadowbrook and Chesterfield
Meadowbrook isn’t known for its shopping or dining; however, Iron Bridge Road – the neighborhood’s main thoroughfare – leads further into Chesterfield, where recent construction has brought lots of new dining options. “About 5 years ago, there were essentially a few Mexican restaurants, pizza places and grocery stores, and that was about it,” Green says. “Now, we have a Chipotle, a Starbucks, a First Watch. Things are really coming up around here.” Closer to home, residents can find groceries at Food Lion, discounts at Ollie’s Bargain Outlet and Cajun seafood at Ocean Crab House.
