Suburban atmosphere with picturesque sunsets

Wellington, 15 minutes from Boston, is a natural phenomenon. Bordered by two rivers and with two shopping centers nearby, Wellington balances nature with a suburban atmosphere. “I always joke with people that Medford is the center of the universe,” says Erin Murphy, hostess at The Ford Tavern and Wellington resident. “It’s very easy to go anywhere for work, pleasure or vacation.” Residents may use the Wellington Transit Station to reach Boston in 30 minutes or use Fellsway and I-93 for a 15-minute drive. Ample sidewalk space and well-maintained lots make walking in the area easy. Houses tend to be built upward instead of outward and are packed close together. The residential area gives way to nature, and locals may enjoy walking or running along the trails beside the Malden and Mystic rivers.

Mystic and Malden Rivers

Harris Park has play structures for toddlers and older children, as well as several swing sets and covered picnic tables. There is also a tennis and basketball court for those who wish to pick up a game with friends or family. Visit the Mystic River State Reservation and climb the wooden lookout tower to view the river. In neighboring Torbert MacDonald State Park, visitors can play a song on the large chimes at the Mystic Music Fence or walk along the dock to see a sunset cityscape. Located on the banks of the Malden River, The Park at River’s Edge features a mile of walking paths and is open daily from dawn until dusk.

The Ford Tavern and Wellington yacht club

Groups in the area host events. The Ford Tavern has a full calendar with everything from drag shows to art classes for children. “We have a homey, family-friendly feel,” says Murphy. “We do DJs and bands sometimes at night as well as drag shows and kids’ events.” Boat owners launch from Mystic Wellington Yacht Club where something is always happening on water and on land. The club hosts regular events like live music, muscle car shows and artisan markets. The yacht club also holds a summer fundraiser called “Fishin’ with a Mission,” where residents participate in a fishing competition to raise money for “My Little Buddy’s Boat,” a group that supports autism awareness and hosts boating events that allow families with autistic children to bond.

Important to know

Being beside two waterways leaves Wellington vulnerable to flooding. The city of Medford is actively implementing solutions through drainage systems and nature-based strategies to mitigate flooding.
