Natural areas among the many draws for Oak Grove-Pine Banks
Sandwiched by the Middlesex Fells Reservation and Pine Banks Park, the Oak Grove-Pine Banks neighborhood stretches across the southern half of Melrose, Massachusetts, a suburb north of Boston. “People love this area because you can hop right on the highway, and it’s like 15 minutes to Boston,” says Jill Leeman, a real estate agent with Leeman & Gately/Compass. “And the access to trails in the Fells is a big draw lately. Some people are walking dogs or taking hikes 3 or 4 times a week.” The natural areas may get the headlines, but this neighborhood also has access to highly rated Melrose schools, public transit infrastructure and the numerous shopping and dining options in downtown Melrose.
Victorians, Cape Cods and Colonials in a fast-paced market
Single-family homes here can cost between $625,000 and $865,000, though some newly remodeled homes here can climb to prices ranging from $1 million to $1.6 million. Colonial Revivals and Cape Cods are the dominant styles, with some Victorian and ranch-style homes sprinkled throughout as well. “You have gorgeous houses,” Leeman says. “People love the architecture.” Small, tidy lawns and mid-size trees characterize the lots, and sidewalks line many streets. Condos and townhomes can cost between $535,000 and $840,000. Homes spend an average of 11 days on the market, meaning the market moves almost four times faster than the national average.

Natural areas right in residents’ backyards
Pine Banks Park and Oakdale Park sandwich the southern portion of the neighborhood, providing residents huge amounts of green space practically in their backyards. The former offers a mix of wooded hiking trails and sports facilities, while the latter abuts the Middlesex Fells Reservation, 2,600 acres of natural area, with trails, scenic overlooks and water features. Foss Park provides pickleball courts at its small neighborhood park. The community also provides recreation options for its older citizens. “The Milano Family Senior Center has a lot of activities for seniors,” Leeman says. “They’ve been there over 40 years.” Offerings include yoga, bingo, art classes and more.

Melrose School District gets high marks and offers choice
The Melrose School District, which earns an A-minus from Niche, uses a school choice model, so residents with children can apply to several elementary schools. Lincoln Elementary earns an A-minus and is the closest school to this area. Melrose Veteran’s Memorial Middle School also scores an A-minus, and Melrose High School does as well. Melrose High students build and maintain a digital portfolio of their work, which includes a senior capstone project. Seniors also get the chance to explore career paths through a senior internship program. Leeman appreciates how students can walk or ride to school, especially on Fridays when some groups bike to school. “Someone will walk with the kids on their bikes, and they’ll play music on a loudspeaker,” Leeman says.
The Lincoln Elementary School is a public affiliated K-5 school located in Melrose, MA.

Commuter rail, bus service and two main highways nearby
Boston is about 10 miles via Interstate 93 or 12 miles away via U.S. Route 1, two thoroughfares running on either side of the neighborhood. Rail service runs right through the center of the neighborhood; the Haverhill Line stops at both Oak Grove and Wyoming transit stations. “It’s like a 3-minute walk to Oak Grove from some parts of the neighborhood,” Leeman says. Buses also serve several major streets in Oak Grove-Pine Banks. Logan International Airport is just over 11 miles away, and the MelroseWakefield Hospital is no more than 2 miles away.
A mix of local businesses in walkable downtown Melrose
Downtown Melrose has a bevy of shopping and dining choices along Main Street. Barber shops and salons rub shoulders with fitness centers, cafes and restaurants, plus a florist and bookstore. “People love to walk and have coffee in the morning,” Leeman says. “That walkability is huge.” Turner’s Seafood Grill & Market combines a fish market and oyster bar, while Rising Eagle Publick House serves fast casual food in an atmosphere that celebrates the area’s Revolutionary War history. For groceries, Shaw’s is under 2 miles away.

Traditional city events, cultural offerings and markets throughout the year
Melrose residents can take part in myriad events and activities. The city’s long-running Victorian Fair is now in its 43rd year. “All the restaurants, all the hairdressers, all the local high school sports, all the real estate agents, we all have booths with giveaways and talk about how we give back to the community,” Leeman says. The Melrose Symphony Orchestra offers classical programs, and an annual open studio tour allows residents to engage with local artists. The city hosts a farmer’s market on Thursdays, outdoors from June through October and indoors for November and December.
