Quick access to the train station and shopping in Wyoming
Wyoming, just outside Boston, provides a slower pace of life close to public transit, shops and recreation. “You can easily get on a train and be in the city in 15 minutes,” says Jill Leeman, a licensed real estate agent with Compass, and a longtime Melrose resident who’s been selling homes in the area for over 20 years. Originally part of Charlestown, the oldest neighborhood in Boston, Melrose became its own town in 1850. As Boston further developed, so did Melrose, which increased its population from 4,500 people in 1880 to over 15,000 by 1910. Today, the city’s nearly 30,000 residents have access to a thriving downtown shopping district and some of the area's largest outdoor attractions.
Victorian-style homes starting in the $700,000s
The neighborhood features Victorian-style homes from as early as the 1800s, as well as Cape Cods and colonials from around the 1950s. Houses are set close together, though properties do have front and back yard space. Most homes have driveways, and some also come with detached garages. Single-family houses typically sell for $700,000 to $1.2 million. There are also condos ranging from $300,000 to $700,000. The market in Wyoming moves very fast, with properties usually selling after just 16 days.
Commuting via train, I-93
Wyoming is next to downtown, and sidewalks throughout the neighborhood make it walkable. The Wyoming Hill train station offers daily service to and from Boston’s North Station. Commuters can take West Wyoming Avenue 3 miles west to get to Interstate 93. The closest hospital, Melrose Wakefield, is less than a mile north. Boston Logan International is located 12 miles south.
Pocket parks, close to Middlesex Fells Reservation
Several pocket parks like the Lincoln Playground and Gooch Park provide playgrounds and sports facilities. Just to the west, the Middlesex Fells Reservation is one of Melrose’s largest attractions. Covering more than 2,500 acres, the preserve has over 100 miles of mixed-use trails, a dog park and an observation tower with views of Boston’s skyline. The reservation also has nearly a dozen ponds and reservoirs that offer fishing, canoeing and kayaking. Also within the Fells, Stone Zoo is a 26-acre facility with nearly 100 species on display. And just east of Wyoming, the Mount Hood Golf Course has an 18-hole course that's open to the public. Bellevue Golf Club offers its members an 18-hole course.
Shops and restaurants downtown
Downtown along Main Street, there are locally owned businesses ranging from barbers to florists, as well as popular dining spots like My Diner for breakfast and lunch and Santa Fe Burrito Grill for Mexican food. Turner's Seafood Grill & Market serves locally sourced seafood and has a fresh fish market. There’s also Shaw’s and CVS for essentials. “You’re right next to downtown, so you have walkability to all these shops and restaurants,” says Leeman.
Highly rated Melrose Public Schools
Students may start at Hoover Elementary, which gets a B-plus from Niche, before going to Melrose Middle, which receives an A-minus. Melrose High also earns an A-minus and offers studies in fields like global education, STEM and the humanities.
Events from the Melrose Chamber of Commerce
The Melrose Chamber of Commerce hosts events throughout the year. The city’s biggest event, the annual Victorian Fair, has taken place downtown since 1980. Held in September, the festival features amusement rides, live entertainment, food trucks and a local business showcase. In July, the annual Summer Stroll brings the community together for a night of music while local businesses serve people from the sidewalks. Main Street shuts down traffic on Halloween night so kids can visit local businesses for candy. And Home for the Holidays in December is a three-day celebration with a parade and caroling, a holiday trolley ride and a live performance of The Nutcracker.
GreatSchools:
The GreatSchools Rating helps parents compare schools within a state based on a variety of school quality indicators and provides a helpful picture of how effectively each school serves all of its students. Ratings are on a scale of 1 (below average) to 10 (above average) and can include test scores, college readiness, academic progress, advanced courses, equity, discipline and attendance data. We also advise parents to visit schools, consider other information on school performance and programs, and consider family needs as part of the school selection process.
