Douglass

Community comes together at Douglass Park
For outdoor recreation, Mauricio points out Douglass Park at the center of the neighborhood: “The Douglass Community Center is part of that park and very active in the community… a lot of family life is centered there,” she says. Spanning more than 40 acres, Douglass Park is also home to an outdoor pool and two basketball courts, two of which are outdoor and one indoor. There’s also a mile-long walking trail and playground area next to a set of picnic tables. Jackson Park is a smaller outdoor green space that sits adjacent to Jackson Elementary School and features a multi-purpose ball field. Just north of the neighborhood is Wolf River, which flows into the nearby Mississippi River. Along Wolf River, residents can find trailheads for the Wolf River Greenway, a pedestrian and cyclist path that extends for miles throughout the suburban Memphis area.
Bus lines operated by Memphis Area Transit Authority
Although Memphis is “definitely a car city,” according to Mauricio, Douglass residents still have convenient access to public transit options. “We have the Memphis Area Transit Authority, or MATA, which residents can take to get to Downtown. You’re conveniently located near the I-40 and bus lines,” Mauricio says. Both Route 8 Chelsea & Highland and Route 52 Jackson are operated by MATA, with the latter connecting to the Hudson Transit Center in Downtown Memphis. I-40 runs north of the neighborhood and connects with other major highways, including I-69, which commuters can take to travel approximately 10 miles into Downtown. Memphis International Airport (MEM) is also an approximately 10-mile drive south of the Douglass.
Residents relax on the front porches of bungalows
Single-family homes here tend to be situated on smaller lots dotted with mature trees and greenery. There are also a number of multifamily housing units in this area, including duplexes. Older bungalows are the most common type of residence in this area: “You see a lot of homes built between the 1920s and 40s,” Mauricio says, also adding that front porches are a distinct feature of the bungalows in this neighborhood and are often used by residents. In addition to bungalows, locals can also find a number of ranch-style and mid-century properties in Douglass. Several new construction developments have cropped up in recent years and have begun to expand the housing market in this area. Home prices tend to range between approximately $75,000 and $175,000, with newer builds being priced on the higher end of that range.
Classic comfort foods at Edna's Diner
Dining locations that serve soul food and classic Southern comfort foods are popular in this neighborhood; for fresh catfish, grits and greens, residents can head to Edna’s Diner on Chelsea Avenue, which offers breakfast and lunch fare. A little way down the road is JJ’s Soul Food & Grill, a local restaurant that continually receives positive customer reviews online. On Jackson Avenue, residents can enjoy Mexican cuisine at El 7 Mares Bar & Grill. There are several neighborhood convenience stores that sell basic groceries in Douglass, including Louie and Sue Supermarket and Sally’s Grocery. Along Jackson Avenue, residents can visit the Memphis International Flea Market, which has seen an influx of small businesses operated by community members.Programs and certifications at Kingsbury Career & Technology Center
Students can kickstart their academic career at Douglass K-8 Optional School, a C-minus-rated institution, or the C-rated Kingsbury Elementary School, which serves students from kindergarten through fifth grade. Students can then attend Kingsbury Middle and Kingsbury High School, which are both rated C-minus. At Kingsbury High School, students have the option to enroll in Advanced Placement courses or participate in programs offered by the Kingsbury Career & Technology Center, including coding, cosmetology, nursing, carpentry and more. Secondary students can also attend Douglass High School, which receives a C rating.Events hosted by local churches and community centers
A range of events, activities and programs are offered for residents at the Douglass Community Center, including adult fitness classes, cultural arts programming, theatre performances, sports teams, holiday festivities and summer camps. The community center is often seen as the center point of the neighborhood that brings people together; residents can also reserve the space for anything from family reunions to business-related events and more. According to Mauricio, numerous neighborhood churches are also known for hosting events, including an annual women’s conference that takes place at the St. Paul Douglass Missionary Baptist Church.
