Douglass has a strong community feel in Northeast Memphis

The neighborhood of Douglass is located in Northeast Memphis, inside Interstate 40 and the Wolf River. The community was started by a freedman, William Rush-Plummer, who named it after the famed abolitionist, Frederick Douglass. Plummer also founded a church in Douglass — St. Paul Douglass Missionary Baptist Church, which is still an important part of the neighborhood. The church, along with the neighborhood’s community center, park and schools, helps to preserve Douglass’ deep roots. Residents value the neighborhood’s strong identity, while relatively affordable midcentury homes stand out to homebuyers.

Quick commutes to Downtown via I-40 and MATA buses

Parts of Douglass are almost surrounded by railroad tracks, which serve the factories and industrial areas around the neighborhood. This can make getting around Memphis a little harder, as freight trains coming through the area can block streets. But it’s always easy to get to the interstate. “You can get anywhere in Memphis,” Anderson says. “It’s not blocked in.” Downtown Memphis is roughly 10 miles away, via Interstate 40. Some of the city’s biggest employers are Downtown, including the hospitals in the Medical District. Memphis Authority Transit Authority bus routes serve the neighborhood, including along Chelsea and Jackson avenues. “They use the buses there because it’s an older generation,” Anderson says. There are also protected bike lanes on Highland Street.
