Hickory Hill
Taking Bill Morris Parkway to the interstate
The Bill Morris Parkway connects to Interstate 240 and Interstate 53, linking Hickory Hill to downtown Memphis in about 20 miles. For public transit, the Memphis Area Transit Authority bus stops along Winchester Road and connects to downtown and the Memphis International Airport, which is about 9 miles away.Ranch-style homes from the ‘70s and ‘80s
Warehouses and distribution centers line Hickory Hill Road, the neighborhood’s western border, and retailers are concentrated along Winchester Road and Riverdale Road — putting most homes within a mile of grocery stores and employers like Sharp Electronics and Cummins. Although a lot has changed over the years, the homes of Hickory Hill still reflect its boom at the tail end of the 20th century. “There are a few two-story homes, but it’s mostly ranch-style homes with brick exteriors,” says Cresha Rounds, a Realtor with Adaro Realty who has been selling homes in the area for over eight years. “You can still find some of that traditional charm.” Most homes were built between 1970 and 1990. Ranch-style houses with less than 1,600 square feet typically range from $130,000 to $190,000, and larger homes with features like in-ground pools or attached garages cost between $200,000 and $300,000. The highest-priced homes in the community are often near the private lake in Pheasant Run, a small subdivision at the southeastern edge of Hickory Hill.Stores and restaurants along Winchester Road
Most shopping needs require a ride to Winchester Court and its surrounding shopping centers, which contain stores such as Winchester Farmers Market, Superlo Foods and Big Lots. Nationally recognized retailers such as Walmart Neighborhood Market and The Home Depot are also along the outskirts of Hickory Hill, just off Riverdale Road to the east and Hickory Hill Road to the west. There are several restaurants off Winchester Road as well. Southern Hands Homestyle Cooking appeals to those with a palate for soul food, including local favorites such as fried pork chops and their signature cornbread loaf — just as it has since 2008. Just across Ridgeway Road, El Mercadito de Memphis plates classic Mexican meals alongside its play area, small arcade and little clothing market.Access to the amenity-rich community center at Hickory Hill Park
Hickory Hill Park spans 80 acres and includes a playground and walking paths, but the park's community center is its centerpiece. This activity hub features an indoor pool with a water slide, indoor basketball courts and several tennis courts. Additional playgrounds and trails are within a mile of the community center at Winridge Park and Raines Road Park. For a day on the fairways, an 18-hole public golf course called The Links at Fox Meadows sits a block from the intersection of Hickory Hill Road and Knight Arnold Road.Spread across several schools in the Memphis-Shelby district
The Memphis-Shelby County district serves the community, but because the neighborhood spans around 14 square miles, students attend different schools depending on where they live. For elementary school, students in central and south Hickory Hill can attend C-graded schools such as Crump Elementary and Highland Oaks Elementary, while other students in the community are zoned for C-minus-graded options such as Belle Forest Elementary and Hickory Ridge Elementary. From here, students can head to one of two C-minus-graded middle schools: Hickory Ridge Middle and Highland Oaks Middle. Kirby High is the most attended C-minus-graded high school in the neighborhood and has a 72% graduation rate and dual-enrollment opportunities in subjects like computer applications and criminal justice. There are two other high schools that students in the south or west might attend, which are Southwind High and Wooddale High, both of which also receive a C-minus grade from Niche. From line dancing to summer camps at community hubs
The Hickory Hill Park Community Center’s calendar stays packed with activities six days a week. Activities range from pickleball games to line dancing. “The center has a huge impact on the neighborhood and is very involved with the community,” Rounds says. Local churches also play an important role in the community’s sense of connection. New Direction Christian Church, which has been a part of the Hickory Hills community for over 20 years, holds summer camps, weekly drama events and monthly breakfasts.Crime Score above the national average
According to the CAP Index, the overall Crime Score in Hickory Hill is 6, which is higher than the national average of 4. In response to growing crime rates, the Hickory Ridge Community Redevelopment Corporation created the Hickory Hill Community Street Watch, which provides volunteer law enforcement support and an online space for communication about safety concerns.
