Students in Kirby Woods can attend Memphis-Shelby County Schools starting at Balmoral-Ridgeway Elementary, which receives a C-plus grade from Niche. They can then move on to Ridgeway Middle and Ridgeway High, each of which earns a C. All three schools in the pipeline offer the International Baccalaureate program to students. Private schools in the neighborhood include the all-boys Memphis University School and all-girls Hutchison School, each K-12 and each given an A-plus grade. “There are a lot of families in that neighborhood that send their kids to those private schools,” Rubenstein says.

Kirby Woods abuts the busy commercial corridor around Poplar Avenue. Grocery stores and fast food casual restaurants fill the shopping centers that line the drag. Run by the Memphis Museums of Science and History, it features a visitor center, a play area and an arboretum with trails around a lake. But it’s Shelby Farms Park, about 6 miles away, that is the area’s most popular park, with trails, playgrounds and even a herd of buffalo among its 4,500 acres. “It’s six times larger than Central Park in New York,” Rubenstein says. “For a park, that’s the spot to go for Memphians. People will drive from all over the city to go there.”

Kirby Woods has convenient access to I-240
Sidewalks sit alongside many of Kirby Woods’ streets, and Memphis’ MATA bus system stops across Ridgeway Road from the neighborhood. But residents generally drive where they need to go. Memphis’ beltway, Interstate 240, is less than a mile from the neighborhood, leading most of the 17 miles to downtown. Memphis International Airport is 11 miles away and offers nonstop flights to nearly 40 destinations.
