Kirby Woods offers a beautiful suburban neighborhood in East Memphis

Kirby Woods is at the eastern edge of Memphis’ limits, still within the city's bounds. However, the neighborhood feels more like a suburb, with home styles and prices more comparable to those in suburban cities like Germantown. “Kirby Woods is a very popular East Memphis neighborhood,” says Max Rubenstein, a Realtor with Keller Williams and a lifelong Memphian. “It’s beautiful, full of gorgeous oak trees. It’s a full canopy throughout the neighborhood.”

Colonial Revival style comprises most of the neighborhood

Throughout Kirby Woods, pipestems branch off Massey Road and Kirby Road. Neighborhood drives are lined by well-landscaped yards, and many end in cul-de-sacs. Colonial Revival style is common throughout the neighborhood, with homes generally selling between the mid-$400,000s and mid-$600,000s. Ranch-style houses, often with columns in front and wings set back on either side, can go between the mid-$300,000s to about $600,000.

Students attend Memphis-Shelby County Schools or highly rated private options

Students in Kirby Woods can attend Memphis-Shelby County Schools starting at Balmoral-Ridgeway Elementary, which receives a C-plus grade from Niche. They can then move on to Ridgeway Middle and Ridgeway High, each of which earns a C. All three schools in the pipeline offer the International Baccalaureate program to students. Private schools in the neighborhood include the all-boys Memphis University School and all-girls Hutchison School, each K-12 and each given an A-plus grade. “There are a lot of families in that neighborhood that send their kids to those private schools,” Rubenstein says.

Shopping and dining sits along Poplar Avenue

Kirby Woods abuts the busy commercial corridor around Poplar Avenue. Grocery stores and fast food casual restaurants fill the shopping centers that line the drag. Poplar Court has a Subway and Papa John’s Pizza, while the Regalia Shopping Center offers several restaurants, including Salsa Cocina Mexicana, a popular spot for Mexican cuisine. Kroger is less than a mile from the neighborhood, and residents can head to the nearby Target for other essentials.

Residents head to Shelby Farms Park for recreation

The Lichterman Nature Center sits across Ridgeway Road from Kirby Woods. Run by the Memphis Museums of Science and History, it features a visitor center, a play area and an arboretum with trails around a lake. But it’s Shelby Farms Park, about 6 miles away, that is the area’s most popular park, with trails, playgrounds and even a herd of buffalo among its 4,500 acres. “It’s six times larger than Central Park in New York,” Rubenstein says. “For a park, that’s the spot to go for Memphians. People will drive from all over the city to go there.”

Kirby Woods has convenient access to I-240

Sidewalks sit alongside many of Kirby Woods’ streets, and Memphis’ MATA bus system stops across Ridgeway Road from the neighborhood. But residents generally drive where they need to go. Memphis’ beltway, Interstate 240, is less than a mile from the neighborhood, leading most of the 17 miles to downtown. Memphis International Airport is 11 miles away and offers nonstop flights to nearly 40 destinations.

Neighborhood association organizes community events

Both the Kirby Woods Neighborhood Association and the Kirby Woods Garden Club are voluntary organizations that foster community and put on events for residents. The association brings food trucks to the neighborhood and puts together holiday celebrations, while the garden club has been around for over half a century and hosts monthly programs about art and history in Memphis. Residents can also head downtown for its many festivals, with several revolving around the city’s musical and culinary heritage.
