Oakhaven
Home varieties under beautiful foliage
Homes of varying styles can be found in the Oakhaven neighborhood, with most constructed in the ranch style and brick ranches with low-gabled roofs among the most popular designs. Colonial homes add more variety with their traditional appearance, while Cape Cod architecture alongside more contemporary designs also populate the area. Pricing primarily falls between $100,000 and $150,000 for recent sales within the neighborhood, and some homes in Oakhaven have sold for as low as $50,000 or as high as $200,000. When the seasons change, front yards and the residential streets fill with red and orange leaves from the trees throughout the area. “It’s really close to the Mississippi state line,” Parr says. “If someone works in northern Mississippi but lives in Tennessee, they’re not paying the state income tax. A lot of people work across the state boundary.”Close-knit schools
Within the Shelby County Schools district, Oakhaven students can find all their schooling inside of the neighborhood’s boundaries. Oakhaven Elementary School hosts kindergarten through fifth grade, receiving a C-minus from Niche, while just around the corner, Oakhaven Middle School and Oakhaven High School are contained within the same building on Ladbrook Road. Oakhaven Middle also receives a C-minus rating from Niche, featuring a student-to-teacher ratio of 21 to one for grades six through eight. As for Oakhaven High, Niche awards the home of the Hawks a C-minus as well, and the school features extracurricular activities like a dance team, art club and color guard for its students.Multiple parks for getting outside
For an outdoor excursion, residents can visit Zodiac Park in southern Oakhaven. Featuring a playground and a grilling setup, Zodiac could be the site of the next neighborhood barbeque. Nearly four miles north, Medal of Honor Park provides locals with walking trails alongside its lake, optimal for birdwatching, along with plenty of open space. At Oakhaven Park, close to the northwestern corner of the neighborhood, clamber onto the playground or enjoy the shade of its pavilion. Oakhaven Park also has a large open area perfect for pickup games of baseball, football or soccer, as well as benches amid its nature-filled surroundings.Barbecue, food trucks and local grocery stores
A community staple for gatherings or simply enjoying some of the food the area has to offer is found at Food Truck Park, located on Winchester Road in the northern part of Oakhaven. A buzzing spot for locals, the Food Truck Park offers numerous vendors serving freshly-made food to patrons, who can enjoy their meals in a covered picnic area. A rotation of food trucks are on the menu for the lunchtime-oriented venue, while Tom’s Barbecue features deli sandwiches, meat items and sides on its menu. Visitors can also see photos of industry icon Guy Fieri in Tom’s as a point of pride, highlighting the restaurant’s feature on Fieri’s hit show Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives. Tom’s is just one of numerous barbecue outlets in the area, famed for its “Memphis-style barbecue” cuisine. Several small establishments, like County Line Grocery Store and Gary’s Market, provide residents with a selection of everyday needs.Outside of Oakhaven
Interstate 55 and Highway 78 flank Oakhaven, each running very close by to the west and east, respectively. “It’s very quick to get to Memphis,” Parr says. “It’s right by the two interstates, and people can be on the 240 and 55 in 15 minutes.” I-55 goes as far north as the Great Lakes and all the way south to the Gulf of Mexico, with a section of it running through Memphis, while 78 unfolds from Memphis through four other states, ending in Charleston, South Carolina. Highway 78 was also recently extended into Arkansas, making it a six-state thoroughfare. Just to the northeast, on the other side of Oakhaven’s boundary, is Memphis International Airport. Serving nearly a dozen airlines, as well as operating as FedEx’s primary hub, the airport helps travelers reach destinations like Los Angeles, Miami, Boston and Chicago beyond its terminals.
