Parkway Village
Ranch-style homes with brick exteriors
The neighborhood is densely populated with single-family homes built around the mid-1900s. “These are traditional-style houses, with most going for around $150,000,” Bynum says. “You have owner-occupiers and a lot of investors as well.” The vast majority of houses are single-story and sit side-by-side on modest lots with an average size of about 9,000 square feet. Three-bedroom ranch-style homes with brick exteriors and attached carports are common, with prices ranging from about $85,000 to $175,000. New construction built in the early 2020s can be found in the eastern portion of Parkway Village, with three-bedroom modern bungalows starting at around $225,000.Access to thoroughfares and public transportation
Parkway Village is located just south of Interstate 240, which connects to Interstate 40 to form a contiguous beltway around Memphis. The neighborhood is also located 15 miles southeast of Downtown Memphis, and Route 36 of the Memphis Area Transit Authority bus connects to the city center after making several stops along American Way. For longer trips, residents are conveniently located about 5 miles from the Memphis International Airport. The BNSF Railway runs diagonally through Parkway Village, and the sound of freight trains passing through can often be heard.Low student-teacher ratio in Shelby County schools
Children in the area attend the Shelby County School District, which has an average student-teacher ratio of 16-to-1. Younger kids in grades K-5 may begin their education at Sheffield Elementary School before moving on to American Way Middle School. Teens may attend Sheffield High School, where students can take hands-on courses in coding, cosmetology, culinary arts and more at the Sheffield Career and Technology Center. All three schools earned a grade of C-minus from Niche. The county follows a General Choice Transfer process, meaning that students can apply to attend other public schools outside of their assigned pathway. The neighborhood contains several options, including public charter schools such as the Memphis School of Excellence, which serves grades 6-12.Big-box retailers and local spots
Shopping centers in Parkway Village provide residents with quicker access to big-box retailers and local restaurants. For the necessities, the Village Plaza includes Walgreens and Save A Lot, one of several grocery stores in the area. Most of the neighborhood’s commercial activity is centered around American Way, where the line extends down the street at Taco Nganas, a Mexican food truck known for its homemade consommé and cold Jarritos sodas. Down the street, locals can stop by the Prohibition Lounge for a vibrant nightlife atmosphere complete with live music. Further south along Lamar Avenue, Marvin’s Hot Kitchen and Deli serves homestyle soul food platters.Explore playgrounds, sports courts and community centers
Several green spaces are scattered throughout Parkway Village, including the McFarland Park and Community Center. Outside, kids can explore a playground with vibrant rubber surfacing and in the warmer months, they can cool off at the splash pad. Inside, the community center features an indoor basketball court, fitness facilities, an art studio and more. The center also offers summer camps, youth team sports and educational programming to residents. A bit further south, locals frequent Walter K. Singleton Park, which has a playground, sandlot-style ballfield and a tennis center with eight lighted courts.Celebrate Halloween at local haunted houses
Each fall, locals gather in the Trolley Station Shopping Center for HauntedWeb, a seasonal attraction featuring four haunted houses. The event also includes a family-friendly fall festival with carnival games, local food trucks and trick-or-treating.Proximity to the FedEx World Hub
Parkway Village is home to the FedEx World Hub, an expansive shipping facility located alongside the Memphis International Airport. The airport is the second-busiest cargo airport in the world, and FedEx employs over 11,000 people at its Memphis hub.
