The median sales price for homes in Shady Grove is about $230,000, higher than the median for Memphis as a whole, which is $200,000. “It’s mostly really nice higher-end houses,” says Frances Anderson, a Realtor and vice president with Crye-Leike Real Estate Services who has worked in Memphis for 25 years. “It’s definitely higher-end.” But you can find a wide selection of homes and home prices in Shady Grove. Modest townhouses, condos and ranch-style homes can sell between $100,000 and the mid-$200,000s. Larger French Country-style cottages and bi-level houses sell from the mid-$200,000s to the mid-$400,000s. A few scattered properties go for as much as $1 million to $1.5 million.

Otherwise, there are several private options nearby, including the top-rated Westminster Academy.
Hutchison School is an all girls private school serving students in the nearby area.

Commuters use Bill Morris Parkway and I-240 to get downtown
Bill Morris Parkway runs along the edge of Shady Grove. The highway turns into Interstate 240 and heads to Downtown Memphis, 18 miles away. Rush hour can get tricky, especially where Bill Morris and I-240 meet. “It just depends on the time of the day,” Anderson says. “Early morning and evening time when people are getting off are normally pretty bad. Weekends are different, they’re okay, a little bit.” For work, people head downtown or toward Memphis International Airport. That’s where lots of FedEx’s jobs are, with the company headquartered in the city.
Shady Grove is located in East Memphis, roughly 20 minutes from downtown.

People can head right across the street to the Kirby Gate to shop. Kroger is the community’s grocery store, while the Walgreens nearby has a pharmacy. The shopping center also has lots of dining options, including:

Locals head to Shelby Farms Park for outdoor fun
Some of the communities within Shady Grove have their own recreation, like the pool and tennis courts at the Park at New Castle apartment complex. But most people head to Shelby Farms Park, 9 miles away. The park is one of the largest urban parks in the country and has tons to do. Visitors can go to several playgrounds, take a canoe onto the lake or even check out the park’s buffalo range. The park also hosts festivals for the community. “They have events there that we’ve attended,” Anderson says. “They have little picnics and little Oktoberfests and different things there. It’s a nice area.”
