Centrally located neighborhood in Mercer Island
The Plateau is in the middle of it all. This Mercer Island neighborhood is shaped by suburban undertones, with moderately-sized homes, acclaimed public schools and a slew of local events. Coldwell Banker Realtor Sarah Ford, who has lived and sold on the island for over 25 years, praises its topography: "This little portion is pretty flat, which makes it very easy to scoot around on a bike or go for a nice walk without too much exertion." She also adds that its central location makes it ideal because "it puts you close to Island Crest Way, which is our central artery that goes from north to south. It’s also just a few minutes to the on-ramps to I-90. It’s a very convenient location both for car commuting and walking to the different amenities."
Beautiful homes on large lots and abundant tree life
Occupying spacious lots, the neighborhood's many ranch-style and Craftsman homes are shaded by plenty of tree life. "It's sort of the middle because it’s not as eclectic as the north end but it’s not as planned as some of the south end neighborhoods either. It’s a lot of mid-century homes built in the sixties and seventies. And, of course, when you get great views, those tend to get higher land value," Ford says. "Our inventory is pretty low. We anticipate more coming on the market in 2025, but it’s a great time to be a seller.” With prices ranging from $1.3 million on the low end to $4 million on the higher end, properties spend 15 days on the market for selling. There are a few outlying luxurious homes that can reach as high as $7.5 million.
Mercer Island schools earn excellent ratings
Island Park Elementary School and Islander Middle School have been given A-ratings from Niche. Mercer Island High School has an A-plus and offers a Running Start program, which allows juniors and seniors to take tuition-free classes at Bellevue College and earn dual credits.
Exploring the parks around The Plateau
Ellis Pond Park includes a boardwalk, a certified wildlife habitat and trails that connect 89th Ave SE to 90th Ave SE. Its namesake pond draws lots of ducks and bird watchers. The indoor Mary Wayte pool is open to the public and offers swimming lessons and party rentals. Right outside the neighborhood is Rotary Park, a small neighborhood green space that’s great for eating lunch at the picnic areas or letting the kids run around after a visit to the nearby Mercer Island library. The Mercer Island Boys and Girls Club and the Mercer Island Learning Lab are just to the east of the neighborhood.
Short trips outside the Plateau to shop and dine
The Plateau is predominantly residential, meaning there aren’t any restaurants or shops in the neighborhood. It takes a short drive to get groceries or go out for a meal. Vivienne’s Bistro creates modern takes on Asian cuisine, offering entrees like crispy Peking duck and Malaysian-style barbecue. Local chain Homegrown specializes in farm-to-table dining. French cafe La Fete Patisserie offers baked goods to start the day and includes outdoor seating. Metropolitan Market Mercer Island and QFC are close by for grocery runs. The Mercer Island Thrift Shop doubles as a treasure trove of secondhand finds and is a frequent donor to Mercer Island Youth and Family Services.
Getting involved in Mercer Island's theater scene
Kids can get involved in the performing arts at Youth Theatre Northwest, a year-round venue that includes classes and summer camps. The theatre also has programs for teens, including cabaret, radio drama and improv. "It's an amazing organization. The people who run it care about the development of the kids and it gives them a great community. It’s a home away from home," Ford says.
Using public transit and Interstate 90
Island Crest Way travels along the west side of the neighborhood, where public buses also make several stops. This route meets with Interstate 90 to the north of The Plateau, giving access to the rest of Washington. Downtown Seattle is 8 miles westbound, and Bellevue is less than 6 miles eastbound. Seattle-Tacoma International Airport is less than 20 miles away.
Severe risk for poor air quality and crime scores
Data from First Street reports that the Plateau is at severe risk for poor air quality and moderate risk for high heat and wildfires. The neighborhood's CAP Index Crime Score is low, earning an overall score of 1 compared to the national average of 4.

The GreatSchools Rating helps parents compare schools within a state based on a variety of school quality indicators and provides a helpful picture of how effectively each school serves all of its students. Ratings are on a scale of 1 (below average) to 10 (above average) and can include test scores, college readiness, academic progress, advanced courses, equity, discipline and attendance data. We also advise parents to visit schools, consider other information on school performance and programs, and consider family needs as part of the school selection process.
