Homes with expansive lots give residents a bit of breathing room
Hollis’ homes are often situated on large lots, either at the cusp of family farmland or within a series of residential neighborhoods with space between neighbors. The community predominantly features a mix of historic farmhouses and modern traditional and Colonial Revival homes. Towering trees line both sides of these winding roads, creating a secluded atmosphere among the fields and forests. Without formal sidewalks, residents may find themselves sharing the road with walkers or cyclists, so maintaining a slow speed limit is important.Homebuyers can find a series of smaller homes in Cape Cod and mid-century styles, some with wood-burning fireplaces or generous yard space, often costing between $300,000 and $500,000. From there, buyers will find that larger homes will cost between $500,000 and $700,000, including raised-ranch and split-level designs on hilly driveways or Colonial Revivals on tidy lawns.
As prices increase, folks will find family estates in various styles, from contemporary log cabins to early 1800s farmhouses, costing between $700,000 and $900,000. For those seeking new or to-be-built homes near Silver Lake State Park, prices can extend up to $1.5 million. Additionally, available farmland or lots with a few acres make for great beginnings to a custom build. Land for sale may start at about $250,000.
Silver Lake State Park offers outdoor fun and aquatic adventures
Silver Lake State Park is famous for its eponymous lake. Angeline Gorham, area resident and owner of Verani Realty with Berkshire Hathaway Home Services, says that people from Nashua "often head to Silver Lake or other places in Hollis" when they want to get outside and out of the city proper for a while. The park's beach area has a lot of outdoor recreation opportunities, including camping, cabins and lodges. With pet-friendly trails, hiking trails, fishing spots, canoeing opportunities, snowshoeing and a designated swimming area, the park offers a diverse range of outdoor activities. The Beaver Brook Trail, a multi-use pedestrian trail, meanders through the Beaver Brook Reservation in Hollis, encompassing an extensive 35-mile network. The reservation features trails of varying difficulty, from flat to steep, passing through meadows, trees, ponds, streams and beaver dams. The Beaver Brook Conservation Lands also cater to snowshoers in the winter. Potanipo Pond not only has great views of the changing leaves and rolling hills but is also home to a variety of fish species, including pumpkinseed, yellow perch, largemouth bass and black crappie. Nichols Field has a couple of sports courts and ballfields for community games and after-work leagues, while the Community Memorial Peace Park in town has places to sit among monuments and art.Public and private schools provides Hollis students with quality education
Students can begin their public education at Hollis Upper Elementary School, which has an overall Niche score of an A, before heading to Hollis Brookline Middle, which gets a B-plus. Hollis Brookline High also earns an A and offers dozens of extracurricular programs and sports teams, such as skiing, snowboarding, young writer’s and world language clubs. Hollis also has access to a few private education options, including South Merrimack Christian Academy, which is graded a B-plus on Niche and serves kindergarten through 12th grade. 2nd Nature Academy also serves students from elementary through high school and encourages project-based learning for a more focused approach. It does not have a Niche or Great Schools rating.Community organizations and events
Because it is a historic farming town with deep community ties, Hollis residents tend to stay updated with one another through town hall meetings and local events. Organizations like the Agricultural Commission or the Old Home Days Committee meet at gathering spaces like the Lawrence Barn Community Center on Depot Road. Old Home Days is a celebration all across New Hampshire for those who returned home after moving away. Those who move to Hollis can get involved by joining the local Rotary Club, historical society or even the Hollis Seniors group for those over the age of 55.NH-122 and NH-130 provide accessibility
Like Nashua, Hollis is less of a pass-through space and sits right on the pulse of Route 3 – also known as the Everett Turnpike. Getting around in Hollis means driving along slow-moving roads in the landscapes and woodlands along New Hampshire Routes 122 and 130. These crisscrossing roads can help make it easier to keep developers from moving in and cutting through the town. However, those who want to commute 24 miles up to Manchester or the Manchester-Boston Regional Airport must first head east into Nashua to reach Route 3. The same goes for Boston, which is about 50 miles southeast and is much easier to reach via the highway. However, some commuters that head south to Boston or Burlington will park their cars in Lowell and take the train down to avoid morning traffic jams.Homestyle eateries and authentic cuisine makes up Hollis' culinary scene
Hollis is a neighborhood where homestyle breakfasts and diner lunches are pretty common, and folks like to gather on weekend mornings to chat over coffee. Hollis Country Kitchen is one of the go-to spots for classic American comfort food. Hollis Village Grocery and the Monument Square Market both provide fresh produce and ingredients for at-home cooking. There are also a few restaurants near Brookline, which is just a couple of miles away. For authentic Greek and Italian cuisine, Chrysanthi's serves a wide selection of calzones, pasta and lamb dishes. The Alamo Texas BBQ & Tequila Bar is a must-visit for smoked meats and a spicy atmosphere. Its well-stocked bar features taps shaped like barrels and is a hangout spot for motorcyclists. In nearby Nashua, residents can head to Target, T.J. Maxx, Marshalls and HomeGoods. Along the way, folks can stop in at Fulchino's Vineyard for wine and Italian cuisine in the winery's Tuscan-inspired landscape. Just a short drive north is Amherst Street, which has over a dozen big box stores such as Walmart and locally owned grocers like Market Basket and Whole Foods.
