"Disneyland for adults"

With two golf courses and more activities than you can count, Leisure World is definitely deserving of its reputation of being the “Disneyland for Adults.” The gated 55-plus community is filled with plenty of indoor and outdoor recreation opportunities for residents to have an active life and meet long-lasting friends. Founded in 1973, the community sits on 958 acres in view of stunning fairways and the Superstition Mountains, and just minutes away from the Phoenix metro area. With 2,264 and 56 different floor plans homes the Mesa community is packed with opportunities for people ready to start life’s next chapter. Dan Callahan, a realtor with RE/MAX Classic and member of Leisure World’s board of directors says “it’s an active adult community and I mean active adult. There’s so much going on.” A resident for the past 13 years, Callahan notes Leisure World has done a great of adapting to community needs. The neighborhood sits about a mile from US-60 and has 100 restaurants at its fingertips.

Eclectic mix of homes, diverse interiors

Homes in Leisure World were all built between 1974 and 1992 with Ranches particularly common, and also features a wide variety of condos. The monthly HOA fee of $353 covers everything except for golf giving residents a sense of ease. “From the start we had a wide variety from condos to patio homes, to single-family homes. The homes were built from 1974 to 1992 and we even had two floor plans that were built in the late 80s, early 90s that were open concept before open concept was popular. We were always kind of a cutting edge because they built our homes with scissors truss supports after 1983 so that all the walls could come out. So they were way ahead of themselves.” Front yards are often decorated with large, sprouting cacti or palm trees adorning quiet front patios. Low maintenance front yards are common with the community association regularly making upgrades to maintain the neighborhood’s natural beauty. Condominium units are available between $200,000 and $400,000, providing many of the same amenities as homes in the area for a fraction of the price. Leisure World requires that at least one household resident be over 55, but will accept residents as young as 45. Home prices vary depending on lot size but tend to range between $300,000 and $600,000. In winter 2024 the market was a bit softer than regular with snowbird season, referring to Arizonans who are partial year residents, being the hottest time to buy and sell. “If somebody’s selling this is the busiest time of year but it’s a little quieter than normal,” Callahan adds.

Putting the "active" in active community

As the name implies, Leisure World is filled with activities and recreation so that residents can always find something to enrich themselves with. Whether it’s crafting in woodshop classes, learning how to repair antique clocks or just playing a weekly card game with your neighbors, the opportunities are endless. Leisure World has followed national trends where the popularity of pickleball has exploded. Starting with eight courts, the community added eight more to their state of the art facilities to go along with 10 tennis courts after the racquet sports club exploded to 500 members. You can hang with your neighbors over a nice glass of Merlot at the Rendezvous Café located inside the community clubhouse which is home to many activities or enjoy the multitude of finely landscaped walking paths surrounded man made lakes. If you are into staying active, the community center plays host to a fitness center complete with classes for all levels, and two lap pools. The facility offers a staff of personal trainers to work with residents, and also is equipped with a sauna and massage therapy.

A golfer's paradise

Right on the grounds find two private 18-hole golf courses and a driving range. With unmatched views of the Superstition Mountain range, Coyote Run Golf Course is one of the most picturesque places to play in the area, boasting 18 holes filled with water hazards and rolling greens that provide fun for players of all skill levels. The fairways at Heron Lakes Golf Course are lined with mature, towering trees that may present a challenge, but is shorter than Coyote Run and ideal for new golfers still trying to work on perfecting their drive. It is accented with colorful flowerbeds and lakes presenting a rich experience on the links.

Superstition Springs Center mall

Start your weekend with a breakfast burrito or corned beef hash from Over Easy, which offers a variety of breakfast and lunch options in a bright, diner-like setting. If you’re in need of retail therapy, or just need to grab daily essentials, head down to Superstition Springs Center mall. You can grab the latest bestsellers from family-owned Half Price Books, which has hundreds of books, collectibles and music.

Medical care is nearby

Residents in need of medical care can receive quick care from registered nurses at the wellness center but are also only minutes away from Banner Baywood Medical Center, which has served the community for over 30 years. This 342-bed hospital provides a variety of services including emergency treatment, an orthopedic unit, a rehabilitation center and a Primary Stroke Center that provides quick treatment for acute stroke patients.

Easy access to highways

Leisure World has easy access to US-60 and Arizona Route 202, providing quick access to other neighborhoods throughout Mesa and the rest of the East Valley.
